| Obituary | May 29, 2006 | OBITUARY: RICHFORD - Edward Rudolph Nunez, age 75, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2006, at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born Nov. 12, 1930, in Gilbert, Ariz., the son of the late Edward and Annie (Acosta) Nunez. Edward was a resident of Richford most of his adult life and was a member of All Saints Catholic Church. He was employed at Blue Seal Feeds for 43 years retiring June 1, 1993. While working at Blue Seal he was also employed as a waiter at Rogers Grill for several years. Edward was a great fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants, and enjoyed watching NASCAR. He enjoyed all sports and loved to hunt and be outdoors. Most of all Ed loved to visit and reminisce about family, friends and old times. He will be remembered as having a big heart and also for his willingness to always help whenever needed. He is survived by his wife, Janice (Gibney) Nunez of Richford, they were married June 4, 1949; his daughters, Candice Anne Corey of Richford, and Debora May Hildebrand and her husband, Jon of Stowe; a special nephew, who Ed consider his son, Terry Gibney and his wife, Judy of Richford; five grandchildren: Matthew James Corey and his wife Cindy, Saralee Macar and her husband Darren, Brian Nelson Tessier Jr., Jessica May Tessier and her companion Rusty Stevens, Travis Lee Tessier and his wife Nicole; his great-grandchildren, Ashley, Amber, Monica, Chia, Aiden, Sean Michael, McKenna and Brianna; a very special sister, Betty Carrilo of Tucson, Ariz; a brother and his wife, Robert and Alice Reyes of San Leandro, Calif; and several nieces, nephews and cousins in California, Arizona and Vermont. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a half sister, Rachel Reyes. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 2, 2006, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Rev. Theobald Richard celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. He was born December 19, 1934 in Franklin the youngest of seven children of the late Justin & Lillian (Reynolds) Thompson. Gordon spent most of his life in Enosburgh and worked as a farmer, logger and horse trader. He had a special love for draft horses and loved to work with his horses in the woods cutting logs and firewood. Gordon's hobbies included going to horse pulls, fishing and going for rides around Franklin County. He is survived by his children, Jimmy Thompson and his wife Sherry, Ricky Thompson and Lucius Thompson and his significant other Laurie Vachon all of Enosburgh; step-children, Dorcas McAllister and her husband Carroll of Richford, William "Jeff" Gilpin and his significant other Barbara of Jeffersonville and Matthew Gilpin Sr. and his wife Robin of Enosburgh; his grandchildren, Justin Thompson, Sonya Thompson and her significant other Josh, Ella Thompson, Adrianne McAllister and Adam, Bobbi, Matt Jr., Jessie, Kimmy & Jasmine Gilpin, and Karrie Hall; great grandchildren, Garrett Snider, Elena Gilpin, Peyton Goss, and Sophie Hall; a brother, William Thompson and his wife Lorraine of Swanton; a sister, Anna White of Enosburgh; special friend, Betty Billows of Enosburg Falls and several nieces & nephews. She retired from Energizer in 2010 and spent time helping at the Enosburgh Public Library. She played softball in local leagues with her sisters for several years. Carol also enjoyed playing cribbage, bowling, gardening, reading, dancing, bingo, socializing at the monthly Ladies 500 Club and going on trips to casinos with friends. Carol also loved Sunday dinners with her family and planning family holiday's and reunions. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister. Carol is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Barry and her husband Tom and their children Austin & Randi all of Bakersfield; her son, Michael Abell and his wife Juli and their children Susan & Bobby Wyman all of Bakersfield; step-son, Mike Greenwood of Sheldon; 7 siblings, Ruth Quintin of Colchester, Arreta Boyd of Berlin, VT, Wendall Emch and his wife Bev of Enosburg Falls, Ralph Emch and his wife Cathy of Enosburg Falls, Shirley Paradee and her husband Brad of Fairfield, Jean Richard and her husband Bubby Richard of Franklin and Joan Myott and her husband Allen of Enosburg Falls; many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends. She was born in St. Albans on May 19, 1952 the only child of Florence (Kelly) Putnam and the late Fred Putnam. Darlene was raised in St. Albans and graduated from Bellows Free Academy. She moved to Enosburg Falls in 1975 and started a family. Throughout her working career her two favorite jobs were having her own child daycare and working with her friends at SCOTT. She enjoyed many things; her dogs, antiques, shopping, lawn sales, decorating her home, maintaining flower gardens, watching scary movies, visiting with her special friend, Patty Stowe and going for rides. She travelled cross country in her teens with her parents and got to see many spectacular places. In her later years she spent most of her weekends, when she was able to, travelling with her husband John in one of their antique cars; hitting all the back roads and neat dining spots. Recently she and John made another home in Crossville, TN where they planned to spend retirement. She is survived by her husband, John Leach and their daughter Misty Leach both of Enosburg Falls; her 2 sons, Brian Bonk and his fiancé Kimberly Fiske and their children Jacob & Nicholas all of Richford and Landon Bonk and his wife Katie and their children Bella & Broden all of Enosburg Falls; her mother, Florence Putnam of St. Albans; 2 step-daughters, Sykie Leach of Enosburg Falls and Sonya Leach of Colorado and a special friend, her dog Ollie. Darlene was predeceased by her father, Fred Putnam. Darlene will be remembered as a strong, determined woman who never gave up, no matter how tipped the odds were. With 18 years of struggling from one cancer to another she always kept taking the next step with anticipation of a clean bill of health and a stress free retirement. When it came to her health she never complained or let it get the best of her. In keeping with Darlene's wishes, services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Doe, she was the fourth daughter of the late Hibbard and Olive (Hicks) Guilmette of Richford. Louise and Arthur along with their children Hibbard S., Francis P. and June were life-long residents of Richford. It was her love for children that led her to open their home to many children needing temporary parenting and to later become a Foster Grandmother at the Country School. She loved to bake and share those baked goods with family and friends, especially at 44 Main. She was also a communicant at All Saints. | Obituary | Jun 5, 2013 | OBITUARY: FRANKLIN - Betty M. Sweet, age 80, passed away Tuesday evening June 4, 2013 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans with her loving family at her side. She was born August 12, 1932 in St. Albans the daughter of the late Hortense St.Pierre & Armand Williams. Betty met Nathan Sweet when she was in the 1st grade and she later married him on January 23, 1954. They resided in Franklin for the duration of their 60 year marriage. She devoted her life to raising and caring for her family. After she raised her two sons, she became a very doting grandmother who always offered comfort and guidance. As a younger woman, she enjoyed working in her gardens, traveling with her family, and creating crafts. In recent years she spent most of her time visiting with family and friends. She will be missed by many. She is survived by her husband Nathan Sweet of Franklin; her son, Gilbert Sweet and his wife Monica of Franklin; her grandchildren, Amy Forgues and her husband Travis, Harmonie Jewett and her husband Jeff, and Jaime Sweet and her partner Mike Domina; her great grandchildren, Emma, Gabriel & Molly Forgues, Kalie Sweet, Riley Noel & Makaylah Domina; her siblings, Michael Williams, Raymond Williams, Sylvia Cameron and her special sister whom Betty was very close to, Peggy Dubie; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her son, Randy Sweet in 1979. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 7, 2013 at 11:00 Am at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will follow in the East Franklin Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 AM until the hour of the funeral. She was born February 12, 1940 in Berkshire the daughter of the late James W. & Marion A. (Wetherby) Thompson. Shirley married Herbert G. Nutting Sr. on July 25, 1956. Shirley & Herb resided in West Chesterfield, NH and had worked as an Inspector for American Optical in Brattleboro before moving to back to Enosburgh Center in 1981 to care for her parents and other family members and most recently helping to care for her cherished mother-in-law, Cecile Nutting. She enjoyed photography, sewing, fishing, camping & bottle digging. Most importantly she loved having her children & grandchildren around. She was a former member & treasurer of the Eagles Club in Brattleboro. She is survived by her children, James Nutting and his wife Cindy of Keene, NH, Lisa Bergeron and her husband Thomas of Highgate, Deborah Aldrich and her fiancé, Ron Fuller of Enosburgh Center, Walter Nutting and his girlfriend Kathy Venturella of Spring Hill, FL, and Herbert G. Nutting Jr. and his wife Vicki of Enosburgh Center; 14 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren; her sister, Patricia Parker of Plattsburgh, NY and brother-in-law Earl Parker of Chazy, NY; her brothers, Robert Thompson & Norman Thompson and his wife Linda all of Enosburgh; her mother-in-law, Cecile (Ryea) Nutting of Enosburgh Center; several nieces and nephews. He was born July 30, 1953 in St. Albans the son of Helen (Garrow) Ashton of St. Albans and the late Keith Ashton. Wendall grew up in Enosburg, but graduated from BFA St. Albans in 1971. He spent 35+ years working as book keeper and in the parts department at A. Bonneau Farm Machinery. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and sliding with his children. Wendall’s greatest joy was spending time with his family and he was a loving husband, father, son and brother. He also had a great sense of humor and especially liked to pick on others for a laugh. He is survived by his wife, Ann (Cook) Ashton and their children, Kenneth & Lillian all of Enosburg Falls; his mother, Helen Ashton of St. Albans; his brothers, Gary Ashton of Waterville, Randy & Judy Ashton of Franklin and Howard & Becky of St. Albans; his sister, Cheryl Richard and her husband Greg of Swanton and several nieces & nephews. He was born April 11, 1932 in Montgomery Center and the last of 9 children born to the late Lewis & Anna (King) Greene. Bill was a mechanic at McDermott’s for over 35 years. He enjoyed auctions and garage sales and his “Sanford and Son” shop. In his early years Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing and car racing. His favorite NASCAR racer was Kyle Bush. Bill was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion post #42 for 61 years. Bill leaves behind his children, Sharon Kennison and her husband Tim of St. Albans, Rick Greene and his wife Doreen of Westminster, CO, Brenda Greene of Sunapee, NH and Lori Hemingway of San Bernardino, CA; his grandchildren, Nicole Gagner and her husband Steve, Hollee Kennison, Aaron Kennison and his wife Tessa, Jay Brode and his wife Samantha, Mike Brode, Katie Brode, Kasey Greene and Andy Jensen; his great grandchildren, Madison & Marcus Gagner and Rosalie Brode; his “step-daughter”, Kimberly (Lawyer) Bates her husband Tom and their children Bradley, Courtney and Zachary; his daughter-in-law, Linda Alexander; the mother of his children, Barbara (Hull) Blow and his good friends, Jim Button, “Boob” Gleason, Bobby Duso and Rene Demers and several nieces & nephews. He was born in St. Albans on April 28, 1934 the son of the late George W. & Viola (Cross) Levick. Pete was employed at Boise Cascade in Sheldon Springs for 35 years retiring in 1989. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and served on the church council. He was a Scoutmaster with Troup # 34 and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Pete served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne during the Korean War and was a Charter Member of the American Legion Post #88 of Sheldon. Pete was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a loving husband, father & grandfather and could always be counted on to be there for his family and friends when needed. He is survived by 2 sons and their wives, Peter & Tina Levick of Fairfax, and Alan & Joan Levick of Richford; 3 daughters, Noreen Levick of Swanton, Lori Thompson and her husband Lester of Franklin, and Cynthia Barnes and her husband Robert Jr. of Enosburg Falls; 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; sisters, Shelby Wetherby of Berkshire, and Carla Nichols of Cassville, MO; sisters-in-law, Norma Boudreau and her husband Carroll of Sheldon, and Joan Sweet of Sheldon; several nieces and nephews. She was also a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 88 of Sheldon serving terms as Secretary, Treasurer and President. Eleanor had worked as a substitute postal clerk in Sheldon, at Missisquoi Pulp Mill in the office, and as a clerk at Ben Franklin in Enosburg Falls and St. Albans. Eleanor will be remembered by her family and friends as a wonderful, loving and caring person. She is survived by her husband Edwin “Pete” Levick of Sheldon Springs. They were married on May 6, 1953. She is also survived by 2 sons and their wives, Peter & Tina Levick of Fairfax, and Alan & Joan Levick of Richford; 3 daughters, Noreen Levick of Swanton, Lori Thompson and her husband Lester of Franklin, and Cynthia Barnes and her husband Robert Jr. of Enosburg Falls; 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; sister, Norma Boudreau and her husband Carroll of Sheldon; sister-in-law, Joan Sweet of Sheldon; several nieces and nephews. He was born in Sheldon on January 4, 1927 the son of the late, Carmine A. & Mable M. (Malone) Cutting. Merrill was a 1945 graduate of Brigham Academy. On August 14, 1949 he married Phyllis C. Goodhue in the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church. Merrill spent all his life in the milk business, first on the family farm in East Bakersfield then at United Farmers Creamery in Enosburg Falls. He retired in 1980 from a back injury while working at the St. Albans Co-Op Creamery in St. Albans where he was a Foreman. Merrill loved to read and spent many hours reading anything he could get his hands on. He was a member of the Lincoln Lodge # 78 F&AM and the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church. | Obituary | May 11, 2018 | OBITUARY: ENOSBURG FALLS – Phyllis Carol Cutting, age 90, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at her home. She was born in Montgomery Village, August 5, 1927, the daughter of the late Lewis H and Lydia Mae (Young) Goodhue. She graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1947, third in her class. August 14, 1949, she married Merrill Allen Cutting in the Enosburg Falls Methodist Church, of which she was a member. She worked as a Lab. Technician at the United Farmers Creamery, Enosburg Falls, and then was a stay at home mom for several years. She worked a short period for Fonda Container, St. Albans, VT. She retired in 1992 after 25 years from Union Carbide / Eveready Battery Inc., St. Albans, Vt. Her life revolved around her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved to knit, crochet and work in her small vegetable garden. She is survived by three special children and their families, Keith Allen Cutting and his wife Susan of Springfield, NH, Patricia Mae (Cutting) Couture and her husband Mark of Georgia, VT and Donald Howard Cutting of Enosburg Falls, VT, with whom she made her home; four special grandchildren, Justin Allen Cutting and his wife Lynn of Hampton, NH, Andrew Michael Cutting and his wife Christine of Eden Prairie, MN, Krista Myra (Couture) Birkheimer and her husband John of Franklin, VT, Nathan Allen Couture and his wife Jina of Georgia, VT; great grandchildren, Parker & Paige Cutting of Hampton, NH, Grace & Will Cutting of Eden Prairie, MN., Adam Birkheimer of Franklin, VT, Anastasia & Penelope Couture of Georgia, VT; step grandchildren, Kevin Trybulski and his wife Chase of Newport, NH, and David Trybulski of Springfield, NH; step great grandchildren, Carter & Sadie Trybulski of Newport, NH, Tristen, Noah & Micah Trybulski of Springfield, NH; brother-in-law, Wendell “Bing” Gilbert; sister-in-law, Barbara Cutting; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. | Obituary | Jan 1, 2013 | OBITUARY: MONTGOMERY - John E. Deuso, 84, of Montgomery Center passed away at Fletcher Allen Healthcare on Sunday, December 30, 2012. Born December 13, 1928 in his parents' home in Richford, John was the son of the late Harold and Olive (Donna) Deuso. John was a true Vermonter, a lifelong resident of this area and a well-known and respected part of the community. With his wife Pauline ("Polly") he owned and ran Deuso's Grocery in East Berkshire for 21 years, until their retirement in 1993. In 1947 John married Gladys (Ryea) and over the next 20 years raised their three children together. Gladys passed away in 1967 and John worked at the paper mill in Sheldon and on the weekends at Puffer's IGA in Montgomery Center. His work ethic was a testament to his heritage, as he continued to work hard to support his children. He was eventually forced to leave his job at the mill due to allergies but went to work full time at Puffers. In 1968 John married Pauline (Stanhope) Cluba who along with John's three children, George, Diane and Betty, joined families with Polly and her sons, John and Frank. They made their home in Montgomery. In 1972 John took a "leap of faith" and bought his own store, Deuso's Grocery in East Berkshire. The store was a family affair, where along with his wife Polly, his sister Jenny, his niece Maryann and daughter Betty, they spent the next 21 years running the store. John and Polly were very well known in the community; it's safe to say that there are very few people in Franklin County that they didn't know or whose lives were not touched by him in some way. He would say that in their business in a small town you would have to love people to be successful; and he did. He always extended a hand to help people out. An old hand-painted sign on the side of the store featured a picture of John smiling, proclaiming "The Friendliest Place Around". Deuso's Grocery remained a social gathering site long after the store was passed on to John's nephew Dick ("Dick & Pam's) where people shared stories and relaxed in the front corner of the store in lawn chairs around the always-fresh coffee pot. The local children were also special to John. He always opened the store early in the winter so the children waiting for the bus would have a place to stay warm. Upon their retirement in 1993, John and Polly moved to their new home in Berkshire and enjoyed life, traveling, visiting with friends and family and just relaxing. In later years when Polly was in failing health, John tirelessly and lovingly cared for her with the kindness and good humor that was so typical of him. John was the kind of man who would not turn his back on someone in need. He was loved by many because of his kind and generous nature, his love for his family and the way he always shared the love. There are so many people who John could count as his friends, and every one of us are proud to have known him. Thank you Johnny! John is survived by his large and loving family: son Robert Deuso and partner Brenda Charbono of Casselberry, Fl; two daughters, Diane Pritchard and husband Owen of Lake City, Fl; and Betty Marcy and husband Russell of Richford, Vt; his son John Cluba and wife Lynda of Montgomery, Vt; son Frank Cluba of Derby, Vt; a brother, Steve Deuso and wife Darlene of Eden, Vt; grandchildren Brian Deuso and wife Sylvie, Keith Deuso and wife Terri, and Angela Raner; Tanya Marcy; Ethan Marcy and wife Alicia; a niece Maryann Donna; two nephews Jesse Soule and wife Karen and Dick Donna and his wife Pam, all in Franklin County. He is also survived by many great grandchildren of whom he loved with all his heart. John is also survived by his special friend and companion, Gloria Longe of Montgomery Center, with whom he spent the last five years. Gloria's kindness, caring and companionship truly made John's last few years happy ones. Besides his mother Olive and father Harold and his first wife Gladys, John is predeceased by his sister, Jenny Soule; his brother Roger Deuso; and his wife Pauline "Polly" Deuso. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. | Obituary | Jan 21, 2007 | OBITUARY: EAST BERKSHIRE - Pauline Joyce "Polly" Deuso, 81, passed away on Saturday morning, Jan. 20, 2007, at the Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans. She was born May 25, 1925, in Berkshire, Vt., the daughter of the late Merritt and Dorcas (Hammond) Stanhope. Polly was a lifelong resident of the area and was a 1943 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. On Feb. 16, 1969, she married John Deuso, and together they worked at Puffer's Market in Montgomery Center before moving to East Berkshire where they owned and operated Deuso's Store for 21 years, retiring in 1992. Polly was a World War II, U.S. Army veteran, serving in the WACs from 1945 to 1951 as a medical technician. She was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco and overseas in Germany during the Korean War. She was a life member of the American Legion Post 42 of Enosburg Falls, the V.F.W. Charlie Broe Chapter 11319 in Richford. Polly enjoyed reading and traveling and especially enjoyed socializing with her many friends and getting caught up on all the latest gossip. She loved animals and always happily anticipated visits from her favorite doggie friends. She and John spent many good times bowling at the Dairy Center and playing cards or visiting with friends. When her children were young, some of her fondest times were visiting the family farm in Berkshire where she grew up. Even when her eyesight was failing in her later years, you could not drive by the farm with her without her pointing out the farm and the dormer window that was her bedroom as a child. More than anything, Polly loved spending time with her family. She had to know every detail of everyone's lives, all the time. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a big, colorful personality, and there is truly no other person like her. She will be missed, but the sheer tenacity of her spirit will live on in our hearts forever. Polly is survived by her beloved husband, John of East Berkshire; her two sons, John Cluba and his wife, Lynda of Montgomery and Frank Cluba of Colchester; stepson, Robert "George" Deuso and his wife, Brenda of Casselbury, Fla; stepdaughters, Diane Pritchard and her husband, Owen of Lake City, Fla. and Betty Marcy and her husband, Russell of Richford; a very special grandson, Brian Deuso and his wife, Sylvie of Richford; and grandchildren: Keith and his wife, Terri, and Angie, Morgan, Elliot, Patrick, Savannah, Ethan and Tonya; her great-grandchildren: Michael, Samantha, Alex, Brendan, Aleta and Quinn; her sister, Betty Mossey of St. Albans; a brother-in-law, Frederick Lovelette of Richford; several nieces and nephews; and her special and beloved pets, Bear, Rocko, Wilson, Cedar, Gracie and Rex. | Obituary | Dec 15, 2012 | OBITUARY: RICHFORD – Thomas C. Sartwell, age 83, passed away Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans after a long illness. He was born June 13, 1929 in Cambridge the son of the late Charles & Stella (Laplant) Sartwell. Tom served in the United States Navy and Vermont National Guard. He was a member of the American Legion in Richford Post #12. Throughout Tom’s working career he was a car salesman for Champlain Motors, a mechanic for Handy Motors in Swanton and retired as a licensed electrician for Boise-Cascade. He was a very talented man and built his home, including the plumbing, electric and cabinets. Tom had a very competitive spirit and that would show every time he would try and beat his wife in a game of golf. He also enjoyed bowling and the occasional bingo game. He married Patricia (Rice) Sartwell in 1948, they raised 3 children together. Patricia passed away in 1991. After her passing Thomas married his brother Alfred’s widow, Anita (Taylor) Sartwell. Thomas and Anita were a loving couple and true soul mates. Their love bonded their families and made a home of peace and love. Tom is survived by his wife, Anita Sartwell of Richford; children, Michael Sartwell and his wife Judy of Montgomery, Christal Boutin and her husband Paul of Barton and Timothy Sartwell and his wife Sue of Franklin; step-children, Anita Sartwell and her fiancé Steve Weir, Patricia Sartwell and her husband Rob and Alfred Sartwell and his wife Tasha; several grandchildren & great grandchildren; his brothers, Jason Sartwell and his wife Claireta of Swanton and Miles Sartwell of Highgate and many nieces and nephews.
