| Obituary | Nov 20, 2024 | OBITUARY: Pauline Cecile Pooler (Polly) slipped away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, November 16, 2024, under the glow of the super moon. She was born the middle child of Elphege and Hilda (Garrow) Messier on August 15, 1943, in Barton and grew up in Newport Center on the family farm. She graduated from Newport Center High School in 1961. She worked for years as a nurse’s aide, initially at Broadview Hospital, and also at Bel Aire Nursing Home, Newport Health Care Center, and at the old North Country Hospital. On May 2, 1970, she married Arlis Steven Pooler, who predeceased her in 1975. She returned to school in 1983 and earned her LPN license. Following that, she worked at North Country Hospital, primarily in the ICU, until retirement in January 2010. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Kevin Messier; by her three grandsons, Devon and Christina, Justin and Brittany, and Dylan & Kiley Currier; and by five great-grandchildren, Lia, Jacob, Emma, Ian and Maci. She is also survived by her sisters, Diane Geoffroy and Patricia Royer and brother-in-law Gerard Royer, as well as fourteen nieces and nephews, their spouses and two more continually expanding generations of nieces and nephews. It’s hard to keep up with all of them but she sure tried and was pretty much the “crazy aunt”, always up for pranks and jokes. She will be missed by many, especially her neighbor, Carol Darling, who did so much to help her, and her friend and co-nurse, Kim Major, who was with her to the end. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, as well as her sister and brother-in-law, Jeannette and Landon Davis and her nephew Robert Davis; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Joyce Messier and her nephew Michael Messier; her brother-in-law, Philip Geoffroy, Jr., and her baby sister, Gloria. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, her ready smile and her ability to respond quickly when caught “bending the rules” playing tuck. In her words, she enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, shopping, and most of all, spending time with my daughter and her family.” Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in Newport with Father James Butts officiating. Interment will follow at St Mary’s Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the church at 10:00 a.m. prior to the mass. Crista had a particular fondness for cardinals, often taking moments to appreciate their beauty while gazing out of her kitchen window. Crista also loved Christmas, decorating, and her favorite movies. A woman known for her caring nature and fierce determination, Crista's family meant everything to her. Her steadfast spirit and unconditional love will be deeply missed. He was born February 26, 1939 in Bakerfield on the Ovitt Farm to the late Wendall & Evelyn (LaGrange) Ovitt. From an early age David cultivated a deep love for the land and his community. After attending high school, David enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served overseas, earning distinctions including the National Defense Medal and Naval Expeditionary Force Medal. A true pillar of his community, David was a founding member of the Bakersfield Volunteer Fire Department. His leadership extended to public service as he served multiple terms on the select board, always advocating for the betterment of his beloved hometown. David was not only a devoted community member but also a passionate sportsman. As a dedicated Little League coach, he inspired young athletes, instilling in them a love for the game that would last a lifetime. His enthusiasm for hunting and firearms was matched only by his willingness to engage in conversation on these subjects. A lifetime member of both the NRA and VFW Post 758, he also played a vital role in promoting safe and responsible practices as a hunter safety course instructor. David worked as a salesman in dry goods for many years. In moments of leisure, he found joy on the golf course. Above all, his greatest pride and accomplishment were his children and their families, whom he cherished deeply and supported wholeheartedly. He is survived by his children, David Patrick Ovitt, Michael Ovitt and his wife Ursula, Kimberly Ovitt and her husband Lucien Lesniak, and Brian Ovitt and his wife Karen; grandchildren, Owen Ovitt, Rebekah Ovitt and her significant other Nick Sennett, Elisabeth Upton, Katie Ovitt, and Kyle Ovitt; siblings, Donna Northrop and her husband John, Dennis Ovitt, Dexter Ovitt and his wife Sally, Dwight Ovitt, Dale Ovitt and his wife Mary, and Douglas Ovitt and his companion Jane Gaudette; siblings-in-law, Barbara Riley, Richard Hale and his wife Georgette, Carolyn Clark, Marvin Hale and his wife Sandy, and Mark Hale and his significant other Terry Hale; and many nieces & nephews. | Obituary | Mar 30, 2022 | OBITUARY: RUTLAND — Rena Ann (Garrow) Brunelle, 62, of Rutland, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, March 24, 2022, at the Meadows at East Mountain. She was born in Proctor, June 4, 1959, the daughter of Edward and Elaine (Vitagliano) Garrow. Rena attended Proctor High School. She was employed at General Electric Co. for 35 years, retiring in 2014. Surviving are one son, James Tanner and his wife, Danielle, of Framingham, Massachusetts; one daughter, Nicole Brunelle and her husband, Roger, of Proctorsville; four brothers, Francis Garrow and his wife, Janice, of Proctor, Edward Garrow and his wife, Kimberly, of Fulton, New York, Paul Garrow and his wife, Anita, of Rutland, and Dale Garrow and his wife, Debra, of Rutland; six grandchildren, Tyler, Tori, Lexi, Madison, Mathew and Olive; and beloved nieces and nephews. Rena was fiercely independent. She was devoted to her career and her G.E. family. Rena took tremendous pride in her yard and gardens and was a friend to all animals. Rena enjoyed her coffee and rides on her Harley. Above all else, she loved her family. She cherished shared meals and time spend on Terrace Hill. Rena was happiest when with her grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, March 29, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. Dominic’s Church in Proctor. Burial will follow in South Street Cemetery in Proctor. Rena’s family is grateful for the loving care that she received while at the Meadows.
