Mrs. McDowell loved living at Myrtle Beach during the winter months and Vermont during the summer months. She was predeceased by one son, Jason Grant. Surviving are her husband, Francis McDowell of the home; one son, Bruce McDowell of St. Johnsbury, Vt; four daughters, Susan Foot and her husband, Keith, of Las Vegas, Brenda Beer and her husband, Dennis, of Auburn, N.H., Paula Fairchild and her husband, Barry, of Kempton, Penn. and Dee Lolli and her husband, Tony, of East Burke, Vt; one brother, Peter Coburn of Mass; three grandchildren, Emily Poginy, Abbie Fitzpatrick and Paula Beer; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Aidan Poginy; and a special nephew, Donald Berry and his wife, Fay, of Aynor.

ObituaryAug 27, 2012  OBITUARY: SOUTH ROYALTON - On August 24, 2012, a kind man with a gentle soul left us to fly with the angels. George Dodge, 93, of South Royalton, Vt., left this world peacefully with his loving family and devoted wife by his side.

George was born in Royalton, Vt., on January 26, 1919, the son of Anne (Dutton) Dodge and Chester B. Dodge. He graduated from South Royalton High School in 1937 and from Vermont School of Agriculture which is now Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center, Vt., in 1939. George spent most of his life on the family farm, where he and his wife, Arlene (Morrill), proudly raised their family of four children. They married in June 1939 and farmed together until retirement in 1985.

George and Arlene traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Alaska. A true farmer at heart, George always enjoyed talking to others in different parts of the country about equipment and techniques that were new and different to him.

A true patriot, he had a love for his country and Vermont, always appreciative of the natural beauty of the land. George selflessly devoted his life to family, friends, community and the farming industry.

He volunteered his time at the Tunbridge Fair for many, many years; he was a lister for the Town of Royalton; he worked at the Vermont Dairy Show; was a member of the Methodist Church of South Royalton; as well as a member of the Royalton Lodge #74 I.O.O.F. While involved with the many dairy organizations of which he was a member, he held numerous offices over the years.

George was predeceased by his parents: a sister, Altha Spaulding; a brother, Henry D. Dodge; a son, Richard H. Dodge; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene Dodge of South Royalton, Vt; his son, Theodore Dodge of Norfolk, Va; his daughter, Marie Huggins and her husband Dale of Henrico, Va; and his son, Harry Dodge of South Royalton, Vt. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Polly Morrill.

George loved all of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed taking the little ones up to the barn for a warm cup of milk or taking them for a ride on the tractor. He enjoyed having company and playing games in the evening after the chores were done.

George's one and only true love of his life was his wife, Arlene. They shared their life and their love for over 70 years. He truly loved everything about her, from her cooking to their conversations, playing games, traveling, camping, and working side-by-side to making a living and raising their family.

George knew no strangers - his door was open to all. He was gracious and kind, caring and giving. A soft-spoken man with a big heart, his passing will leave a huge hole in the lives of all who had the pleasure to know him.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, August 28, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, 300 Vt. Route 110, Chelsea, Vt.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of South Royalton with Rev. Sam Newton officiating.

The burial will be held immediately following the service in the Branch View Cemetery in South Royalton, Vt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Assoc. & Hospice of Vt. & N.H., 66 Benning St., Suite 6, West Lebanon, NH 03784.

Arlene married George Dodge, June 12, 1939. They shared many happy times in their 73 years of marriage until his death on Aug. 24, 2012. They lived their entire married life on the Dodge farm on Route 110 in South Royalton.
Arlene loved doing a multitude of things, among them playing games, fishing and knitting baby clothes. She had a passion for seeing the countryside and traveling with her husband in their RV.
She had a deep love for her family and enjoyed laughter and games with them. Her grandchildren, among others, enjoyed the delicious treats she baked and brought a special joy to her and a smile to her face.
She was by George's side in many activities, including the Farm Bureau Show in Barre, Vermont, and helping with the horse show at the Tunbridge Fair. She was an active member of the Rebekahs, where she held many chairs, and a member of the United Church of South Royalton. She also took care of the town books for many years.
She is survived by her son, Theodore Dodge, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her daughter, Marie Huggins and her husband, Dale, of Henrico, Virginia , and her son and longtime caregiver Harry Dodge, of South Royalton, Vermont; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Catherine Morrill; a son, Richard Dodge; three brothers, Richard Morrill, Max Morrill and N. Fay Morrill; three sisters, Irene White, Esther Potter and Hazel Ballou.
Calling hours will be held Monday, April 3, 2017, at 6-8 p.m. at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, 300 Vermont Route 110, Chelsea, VT. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the United Church of South Royalton, South Royalton, Vermont. Burial will be at a later date in the Branchview Cemetery in South Royalton.
