Stephen proudly served his country right out of high school, his commitment to service reflected his strong character and dedication to those around him.

A devoted family man, Stephen was affectionately known as "Pappy" by his cherished grandchildren. He found immense joy in spending quality time with them, often engaging in his favorite activities such as camping and hiking. His love for the outdoors mirrored his zest for life, and he thrived in creating joyful memories with his family. A true jokester, Stephen was always the life of the party, filling every gathering with laughter and warmth. Stephen loved spending time with his Catamount Poker family playing in tournaments.

Stephen is survived by his partner, Diane Elwood; children, John Billado and his wife Crystal, and their children Ava, Alayna, Eli, and Ryan Elwood and his significant other Brittany, and their children Bryella, Bryant, Ava and Gage, and Kyle Elwood and his wife Gabe, and their children, Carolina, Rhett, and Sawyer; mother, Joanne Daigneault and her husband, Andre; father, Wayne Royce and his wife, Evelyn; siblings, David Royce and his wife, Cheryl Gove, Norman Royce and his wife Lori, Naomi Chance and her husband Freddy, and Emma Aiken and her husband Tom; special nieces, Kattie and Christina, and many nieces, nephews, and friends of the poker community.

Friends and family will be invited to Stephen's life celebration events to include a visitation on Thursday, February 27th, 2025 from 5-6:00PM with a memorial service following at 6:00PM at the Goss - Spears Life Celebration Home, 96 Dickenson Ave., Enosburg Falls, VT 05450.

A burial and celebration of life will be held this summer at South Richford Cemetery.

Maurice was born July 30, 1916 in L’ange Gardien, P.Q., Canada, the son of the late Leandre and Emerilda (Beauvais) Robitaille.

Maurice was a resident of East Berkshire since 11944 and was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in East Berkshire. He owned and operated a dairy farm for 44 years, retiring in 1988. He will be remembered as a special husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had a great passion for harness racing, especially with his own horses. He had his own race track on his farm where he would race against his friends every Sunday. His sons would often join him.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeannette Robitaille of East Berkshire; six sons and their wives, Leon and Desneige Robitaille of West Swanton; Rosaire and Rachelle Robitaille of Montgomery; Normand and Bonnie Robitaille of Richford, Rene Robitaille and his fiancée Debbie Gross, Roger Robitaille and his friend Lisa Howard, all o Enosburg Falls; Paul Robitaille and his fiancée Ellie Conger of East BERkshire; four daughters, Rolande Robitaille of Bethanie, P.Q., Raymonde Couture and her husband Paul of North Berkshire, Denise Lafountaine of East Berkshire, Jeannine Hall and her husband Kirk of Jacksonville, Fla; 36 grandchldren, 39 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Origene Robitaille of West Swanton and Ange Aime Robitaille of St. Petersburg, Fla; two sisters, Suzanne Lefevere of Farnum, P.Q. and Rita Tessler of St. Sabine P.Q; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two infant children, Norman in 19948 and Jeannine in 1947; a daughter, Micheline in 1958; a granddaughter, Jacqueline Couture in 1964; a grandson, Robert Robitaille in 1962; two sisters, Rachelle St. Jules and Loratta Vachon; and to half sisters, Ceceil Robert and Leo Leville.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Reverend Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will be later this spring in All Saints Cemetery in Richford.


Visiting hours will be held Wednesday fro 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on Dickinson Avenue in Enosburg Falls.

He is also survived by his great grandchildren Bentley Cartee, Adalynn Hastings, Aniyah Clad, Raylynn Hastings and Heather Tetreault and by many nieces and nephews. As well as his close friends Steve, Scotty and Bill.

Skip did a lot of different jobs in his life starting in his early years he delivered Millbrook Bread. After that he started delivering propane gas sold this company to start Skip’s Rubbish Removal. He then sold his rubbish business to start B & S Variety Store that was located beside the United Church of Derby he moved that business to Nelson Hill Road, which he turned the business in to the first dented can store in Derby. He sold the dented can store to purchase Fireside Campground were he started the Dollar Plus store. He sold the campground and dollar store to retire with his wife Bessie.

Skip was predeceased by brothers Lawrence (Peanut) Hastings, Harry Hastings and his sisters Eda Jane Lyons and Marjorie Betty Flinn.

There will be a graveside service at the Derby Center Cemetery in the spring, will be in the paper with date and time. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mary Wright Halo Foundation 1073 Upper Quarry Road Newport, Vt 05855 in his name. On-line condolences at curtis-britch.com. ObituaryNov 18, 2024  OBITUARY: Bessie I. Hastings, 87 of Derby Vt. Passed away on November 3rd 2024 in Newport, Vt with her daughter Lori by her side and other family members surrounding her. Bessie was born on July 26, 1937 in Holland Vt to Elwin Graves and Sarah White.

On September 23 1961 she married Richard (Skip) Hastings who gained his wings in 2019. She is survived by her children Lisa Hastings, Lori Hastings and her companion Roger Calloway. Her grandchildren Amanda Avona and her husband Sean Avona, Shaun Hastings, Chelsea Tetreault, Ashley Green and her husband Joshua Clad. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Bentley Cartee, Adalynn Hastings, Evelynn Avona, Madelynn Avona, Raelynn Hastings, Heather Tetreault, Aniyah Clad, Mariyah Clad and by many nieces and a nephew.

Bessie had a few different jobs in her early years. She started out by serving lunch to fourth graders, after that she worked as a chamber maid at the border motel, and then she took care of an elderly lady. After those, she started working with her husband skip and the many businesses he bought and owned ending with Fire Side Campground and The Dollar Store Plus.

In 2001 she retired with her husband and together they enjoyed traveling in their camper, listening to old country music, and playing their card and board games with friends. Bessie also loved doing puzzles, cooking/baking and spending time with her kids and great grandchildren.

Bessie was predeceased by her 11 brothers and sisters.

There will be a graveside service at the Derby Center Cemetery in the spring, on May 22nd at 11:00. We will have a reminder in the paper come closer to the date. Higbee of North Ferrisburgh was taken to heaven by angels on March 5, 2015, after a brief illness at Porter Hospital. She was born Margaret Alice Stevens on July 4, 1929, the daughter of the late Arnold and Beatrice (St. Clair) Stevens. She attended schools in Springfield, Vt. On Sept. 1, 1979, she married the late George Higbee. Margaret worked for several area people, caregiving and cleaning. She took pride in her beautiful flowers and holidays displays. Family and the holidays were very special to her. Margaret was a loving wife, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great aunt and friend. She is survived by her brother, Arnold Stevens Jr. and his wife, Barbara; and a sister, Evelyn Roberts. Also surviving is her brother-in-law, Olin Flynn; sister-in-law, Joanne Stevens; special nieces, Zandra (Marcel) Cousino, Iona (Loren) Smith, Mari (Paul) Quesnel, Shari (Roger) Lussier, Terry Flynn; and a special nephew, Tim (Erica) Flynn; many very special great nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Nora Wright. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, George Higbee; a special brother, Herbert Stevens; special sisters, Eunice Flynn, Phyliss Call, and Doris Wetherby; nephews, Kevin Flynn and Scott Cousino; and great nieces, Carrie Flynn and Brianna Popp. Some people make a difference just by being who they are. Their inner light shines bright and touches lives even when they are gone. They still forever play a big part in our hearts... Until we meet again! Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes, with a reception following at the parish hall. There will be no visiting hours. Predeceased by her son, Walter Bennett; grandson, John Bennett; a brother, George Higbee; and a sister, Georgeiana Holcomb.

Funeral services will be held 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10 at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes.

Interment will be in Maple Cemetery in Lincoln in the spring. Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes on Thursday from 3 p.m. up to the hour of the funeral.
