| Obituary | Jun 22, 2010 | OBITUARY: Arland A. Butler, 87, a lifelong area resident and businessman, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at his home in Barton in the loving care of his five daughters and family. He was born in Irasburg, Oct. 28, 1922, the son of Arthur W. and Glenna (Huntington) Butler. He attended grade school in a one-room school on Burton Hill in Irasburg. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1943 and served in the European Theater during World War II in the Cavalry until his discharge in February 1946. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 798 in Newport; the American Legion Post 76 in Barton as well as Post 23 in Orleans. Arland married Janice King on June 8, 1946, and together they raised five daughters in Irasburg and Barton. He was always very proud of his family and their accomplishments. He was a lifetime farmer, logger, maple producer, and school bus driver. With his wife, Janice, he established Butler's Bus Service in 1967, which he operated until his retirement. Arland was a well-known local bobcat, raccoon and bear hunter, having also been a founding member of the Lyndon Cat & Coon Club. He was also a past president of the Orleans Rod and Gun Club. He was an avid sportsman, having played Town Team baseball with his brothers and his father during the 1940s and early 1950s. He also enjoyed a good game of cards. He was a cribbage player and was well known for his perfect hand in cribbage on June 25, 1995. Arland was a lifetime member of the Orleans Lion's Club, and the Elks Lodge 2155 in Derby. He also was a member of the Irasburg Lodge 62 and Barton Lodge 55 of the Masonic Temple, F & AM. He was a respected member of his community being the recipient of the 2007 Community Service Award from the Community National Bank. He leaves his five daughters and their husbands, Linda B. Choquette and Dennis of Glover, Barbara Smith-Shafer and Brent of Irasburg, Brenda Smith and Smitty of Wheelock, Dee-Dee Collette and Mark of Orleans, and Sheila Butler-Kepler and Sandy of West Glover; 11 grandchildren, Carole Briere and husband Scott, Tracie Stevens, Aaron Smith and wife Janet, Cristopher Butler-Smith and wife Shelley, Cory Smith and friend Missy Fontain, Atti Sequin, Eri Sequin, Tessa Collette and friend Shane Bluto, Sam Collette and friend Rachel Miltner, James Arland Kepler, Schuyler Kepler, and an honorary grandson, Erik Smith; eight great-grandchildren, Oakley Stevens, Kristen and Erin Smith, Joshua, Jordan and Katelynn Briere, MaKenzie and Bronson Arland Smith; a special friend, Judy Currier; and Cheyenne, his loyal canine companion; siblings Bernard Butler of Barton, Florence Tillinghast and husband George of York, Pa., Pauline Fernandez and husband Pepe' of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., Francis Butler and wife Phylis of Hardwick, Mass; and brother-in-law Donald King and wife Harriet of West Glover. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Janice, in 2001; his parents, Arthur & Glenna Butler; and siblings Beatrice Kittredge, Stanley Butler, Shirley Smith, Annette Lapierr and Fay W. Butler. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2010, at West Glover Congregational Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Arland's eight grandsons. He was born April 26, 1928 in Enosburgh to the late Rosaire & Vera (Garrow) Larose. Norbert graduated from Enosburg Falls High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He married Ruth Danyow on February 20, 1950. Norbert held several positons throughout his working career. He spent time at Bailey’s Feed Store, the pulp mill in Sheldon and he retired from IBM as an electrical engineer in 1991. After retiring from IBM he was a school bus driver for M & C Transport. Norbert also owned and operated a dairy farm for a few years. His hobbies included dancing, woodworking, gambling at casinos, raising horses, gardening and golfing at the Enosburg Falls Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Larose; their children, Gary Larose and his wife Madeline of Mt. After returning home from the service, Charlie married Bernadette (Bousquet) on June 20, 1955. He worked for several businesses throughout his life including, Bailey Grain Company, Cameron’s Variety Store, Wright’s Dairy and the U.S. Postal Service. He retired from the Postal Service after 30 years of service. Charlie was also a volunteer ambulance driver and a dedicated member of St. John the Baptist Church, the American Legion Post #42 and Enosburg Falls Country Club. His favorite hobbies included golfing and playing cribbage and 500. He enjoyed anything that involved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
