A native of Portsmouth, Va., she was a former first grade school teacher. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Captain Benjamin Merrill Chapter, and of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Robert E. Lee Chapter. She was also a member of several other civic organizations.
Surviving are stepdaughters, Mrs. Betsy Garrett, Mrs. Camille Martin, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C; brother, Charles Gay of Portsmouth, Va.
The family will be at the residence 7-9 p.m. today.

He attended Maury High School and graduated from Santa Ana High School and Santa Ana College, Santa Ana, Calif. An avid student, Mr. Rountree took courses at Stanford University and later at the Norfolk Division of The College of William and Mary. He retired from the Naval Air Engineering Center, Philadelphia, and Lakehurst, N.J. He enjoyed tennis, reading, travel and music and held a special place in his heart for The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Virginia Symphony and The Virginia Arts Festival. His survivors include his beloved wife of 45 years, Brenda Blackburn Rountree; his sisters-in-law, Lillian Blackburn Campbell of Winston Salem, N.C., Vivian Blackburn Gentry of Abingdon, Va., Wynona Buchanan Blackburn of Virginia Beach; and a brother-in-law, Ben Blackburn and his wife Betty of Cherryville, N.C. He also leaves behind an extended family of nieces, nephews and friends whom he loved dearly. Mr. Rountree was a gifted engineer, loving husband and loyal friend. His wry sense of humor, generous and gentle spirit, keen insight and innate intelligence will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends Friday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family will be honored if you make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Mr. Ward was born in Gates County on November 12, 1932, was the son of the late Walter Aleck and Margaret Emily Rountree Ward. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Etheleen Matthews Ward, and a brother, John Atwood Ward.
A 1951 graduate of Sunbury High School, he later attended both Chowan College and Old Dominion College. A tax preparer, he owned and operated Walt's Tax Service for nearly 50 years. Among his many enjoyments in life, he especially loved the beach, shell art, kites, fishing, golf, pool, and traveling with friends. He attended both Eureka Baptist Church and Reynoldson Baptist Church. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve for eight years.
Surviving are his daughter, Michelle Ward Bunch (Bruce) of Leland, NC; his son, Walter Aleck Ward, III of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Alissa Taylor Ward (Lauren Godbout), Tyler Justin Bunch, and Alec Jordan Ward (Marisa Borek); a sister, Frances Ward Brooks of Raleigh, NC; a brother, Thomas Alan Ward (Betty) also of Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law, Annie Marie Ward of Suffolk, VA; sister-in-law, Virginia Dare Matthews of Portsmouth, VA; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in Reynoldson Baptist Church, 73 Reynoldson Road in Gates, NC, and will be conducted by the Rev. Cody Brinkley and the Rev. Jimmy Smith. Friends may visit with the family in the church social hall the hour prior to the services on Tuesday. The graveside portion of the funeral will be held with military honors at 1:00 p.m. in Holly Lawn Cemetery, 1525 N. Main Street in Suffolk.
Memorial contributions in his memory may be made either to Reynoldson Baptist Church, PO Box 308, Gates, NC 27937, or to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.

| Obituary | Jun 30, 2007 | OBITUARY: Bill Brooks died peacefully and suddenly on Friday, June 29, 2007 surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Brooks, Sr., and his mother, Mary Tremer Brooks.
Bill was born in Richmond, VA, on December 11, 1930 and moved to Raleigh in 1944. He graduated from Cathedral Latin High School. After business school, he devoted 37 years of his life to a successful career at IBM. Early in his career, he served nine years in the U.S. Army Reserves. On his 25th anniversary with IBM, he was named to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in recognition of his distinguished service. As a retiree, he volunteered with Senior Net, attended the Triangle Pen Club and the Rex Wellness Center, and tended his garden.
He married Frances Elizabeth Ward on July 1, 1961. Together they raised four children, who have blessed them with six grandchildren. A devoted family man, he loved coaching little league sports teams and was actively involved in his children's activities and the church, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
His surviving family includes his beloved wife of 46 years, Frances; his son, William M. Brooks, Jr. of Fayetteville, his wife Sabrina Sowell Brooks, their children Will and Mack; his son, Bob Brooks of Raleigh, his wife Laura Conder Brooks, their children Hayden, Scott and Emma; his daughter, Amanda Brooks Carson of Raleigh, her husband Chris Carson, their son Jack; his daughter, Elizabeth Brooks Sappenfield of Brookline, MA, her husband Henry Sappenfield; and his brother, John W. Brooks, Jr., of Fletcher, NC. Bill will be greatly missed.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rex Wellness Center, care of the Rex Hospital Foundation.
The family would like to thank the City of Raleigh Fire and EMS personnel and the staff of Wake Medical Trauma Center, who provided such excellent support in Bill's time of need.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday afternoon July 1, 2007 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Brown- Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC.
The interment service will be held at the Eureka Baptist Church in Corapeake, NC on Monday July 2, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.

He was retired as branch head of the Manufacturing Division, Naval Air Rework Facility, Norfolk. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a radio communications supervisor aboard the USS Curtiss during the Hydrogen Bomb test at Bikini Atoll in 1954. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Virginia Beach.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Aliene Burton Rountree; a daughter, Teresa Rountree Williams and husband Steve of Jacksonville, Fla; two sons, Ronald D. Rountree and wife Rehia of Middleburg and Alan D. Rountree and wife Pam of Orange Park, Fla; a sister, Evelyn R. Lassiter, of Sunbury, N.C; two brothers, Robert H. Rountree of Burlington, N.C., and Ralph M. Rountree, of Williamsburg; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Thurman B. Rountree Sr; his mother, Ica R. Rountree; and a brother, Thurman B. Rountree Jr. of San Diego, Calif.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Memorial Park, Jacksonville. Family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, Fla.

Rountree was the son of the late Thurman B. Rountree Sr. and Ica Rice Rountree.
Rountree was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific (Philippines) as a Seabee. After his tour of duty he returned home where he began work at the Naval Air Rework Facility. He was a former member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church and Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. He was also a member of the 32nd degree of Mason's Brotherhood.
Survivors include his wife Mary T. Rountree; three children, Alvin T. Rountree of Cross Junction, Va; Alma Rae Toxey of Virginia Beach and Elaine K. Benjamin of Virginia Beach; one sister, Evelyn Lassiter of Sunbury; three brothers, Robert Howard Rountree, of Graham, NC, Harry Lee Rountree of Virginia Beach and Ralph Marion Rountree of Williamsburg, Va; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; any many nieces and nephews and friends.
In keeping with his wishes, his ashes were scattered off Mission Bay, San Diego, California. Arrangements completed by Telophase Cremation Society, San Marcos, California. Thurman B. Rountree Jr. has left many cherished memories for those who loved and cared for him. He will be missed and remembered well by all who knew him. Memorial donations may be given to a favorite charity.

Mr. Lassiter was born in Gates County, N.C. and was the son of the late William Herbert Sr. and Dolna Harrell Lassiter. A farmer, he had retired as the dryer operator in the instant tea dept. of Lipton Tea, Suffolk. A former member, treasurer, deacon and Sunday school superintendent at Middle Swamp Baptist Church, he, in recent years, was a member of Damscus Christian Church where he had served as a trustee. An active member of the Sunbury Ruritan Club, he had served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Hires. Surviving are his wife of more than 47 years, Evelyn Rountree Lassiter; a daughter, Donna Lassiter Moses and husband Kenneth of Greenville, N.C; a son, Steven Rea Lassiter and wife Tammy of Sunbury; grandchildren, Daniel Rea Lassiter, Mary Lynn Lassiter and Hunter Ian Moses; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Lassiter of Elizabeth City and Dot Carter of Hobbsville; three brothers, W.H. "Billy" Lassiter Jr. and Johnny Lassiter, both of Sunbury and Edward A. Lassiter of Asheville, N.C; and a cousin who was raised as a brother with his family, Jesse Paul Long of Lexington, S.C. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Middle Swamp Baptist Church, c/o Brenda Umphlett, 275 Middle Swamp Road, Gates, NC 27937.
