OBITUARY: Reuben Sherman was the son of Samuel and Mary Crary Sherman. He, his brothers, and his father received land for settling in Concord, now Lisbon. Reuben's father's land was where the town library is sited today. Reuben shot a bear in a tree by the house, there, the first winter the family lived in Concord. The bear meat may have saved their lives. Reuben, Sr., and his father, were Patriots in the Revolutionary War, recognized by the DAR. The "Baral Cache" claims Reuben's first wife was Priscilla Welsh. He later married Lydia Dexter, daughter of Joseph and Martha Smith Dexter; marriage date unknown. He later married Mrs. Ruth Smith Sherman, in 1827, in Barnet, Caledonia, VT. She was the daughter of Josiah Smith and the widow of Reuben's son, Reuben, Jr., who died in 1823.

Researcher's Note*

He filed for and was awarded pension of $66.66 on August 14, 1832. He died 5/3/1843. His widow (Ruth) m. Elijah Howard. When he died she filed for Reuben's pension. He enlisted at Glouchester under Capt. Carr, RI troops at age 15 and fought the British. In 1781 enlisted under Capt Nehemiah Lovell on Lake Champlain fighting Indians. He is buried in Salmon Hole Cemetery, Lisbon, NH. The inscription on his gravestone reads - "For ye are dead and your life is hid in Christ in God" "A Revolutionary Soldier." Ruth was the wife of Reuben Jr, then Reuben SR then E. Howard.¹
