OBITUARY: MONTPELIER — Forrest W. Bolkum, 94, died unexpectedly on Monday, April 22, 2019, at his home.

He was born on June 22, 1924, in Newbury, the son of William and Edith (Lobdell) Bolkum. He graduated in 1942 from Wells River High School. While attending high school, he was a member of the George McClure Marching Band as first trumpeter and traveled all over Vermont and New England, including playing in the New York World's Fair in 1939. After high school, he attended Norwich University and while there, he enlisted in the United States Air Force (1944). While serving, he worked as an instructor on gun turrets. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946. Upon returning home from the service, Forrest worked on the farm and at various construction companies. He helped in building the new Catholic church in Wells River. Forrest later returned to the University of Vermont where he received a degree in civil engineering in 1950.

Forrest’s career primarily was working as a civil engineer with the Bridge Division for the State of Vermont. He retired from the state in June 1990.

Forrest was married to Gwendolyn Worden; they later divorced. He later married Velma Eva Sumner in May of 1965; Velma predeceased him on April 24, 1996.

Forrest was a longtime member of the NRA.

Survivors include his children Angelina Buzzi, of Berlin, Joyce Lehan, of Newburyport, Massachusetts, Jerome Bolkum, of Barre, and Shirley Bolkum, of Essex; grandchildren Christopher and Nicolas Buzzi, Patrick, Ryan and Courtney Lehan, Kerry, Amy and Erin Bolkum, of Australia; and Margaret Murray, a longtime companion since 1998.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2019, at the Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A committal service will follow in the Berlin Corners Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Died in Littleton on January 3rd, Mrs. Harriet Taylor Wells, wife of Capt. B. F. Wells. Mrs. Wells was born in Sugar Hill Aug. 11, 1832 and was married in March 1854 to Mr. Wells. She possessed those sweet virtues of mind and heart which endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. During the War of the Rebellion she followed the fortunes of her husband in camp, and while stationed at Portsmouth, Washington, Fortress Monroe and other places, the soldiers ever found her a constant friend, always administering to their wants as occasion required. For several years past she has been an invalid and much of the time a great sufferer. A few weeks since she buried her only son, the late Walter Wells of Boston, whose loss she very deeply mourned. She was a member of the Methodist Church and possessed a lovely Christian character. Her funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends, Rev. Mr. Frost officiating. The remains were brought to Lisbon for burial in the Grove Hill Cemetery. Mr. Wells has the sympathy of all for this double affliction which has come so suddenly upon him. He is left alone to battle the storms of life and will often sign for the touch of vanished hands and the sound of a voice that is still.

OBITUARY: Charles M. Colburn, 62, of the insurance firm of Colburn and Hazeltine, died suddenly at 11 o’clock Monday, Dec. 19, 1904 at Montpelier of neuralgia of the heart. He had been ill with lumbago for several days, but his condition was not thought serious. He was sitting up in bed smoking a cigar waiting for a barber to come and shave him when he expired without a moment’s warning. Mr. Colburn was in the collision in the railroad yard in Burlington about a year ago and never recovered from the effects of the shaking he received. He was a traveling salesman for the Wells & Richardson company of Burlington 23 years and was widely known in the drug trade in New England. The past 12 years he had been an agent for the Mutual Life Insurance Company. He had been a resident of Brattleboro twice. When he left the employ of the Wells & Richardson company, he was proprietor of the drug store in Brattleboro now owned by F. H. Holden & Co. Last year and early this year he had a desk in the county clerk’s office and carried on his life insurance work here. He went to Montpelier about nine months ago. He is survived by his wife, who has been living in Lyme, N.H., a daughter who is in Seattle, and a sister, Mrs. Kimball, of Woodsville, N.H.
