ObituarySep 26, 1907  OBITUARY: James H. Richards, the veteran fisherman and river guide was drowned in the south Sault Saturday afternoon about three o'clock. He started out in the forenoon on a fishing trip with Jay Downer, of Massena, and his brother-in-law, W.C. Johnson, of Minneapolis. The party had dinner above the Sault and started out to go below. As they were going down the swiftest part of the current the boast struck a post in the crib work that has been built at the point where the Long Sault Development company have been operating. This crib work extends out into the current about fifty feet and forms a platform on which a drill was being operated putting down test holes.

James H. Richards was born at the old home at Richards Landing and was a son of the late John Richards and had he lived until the 27th of next January he would have been 68 years old. In July, 1807, he married Miss Margaret Boles and to them were born six children, five of whom are living. He also leaves one brother and two sisters.

He served in the Civil War as a member of Company A. 92nd New York Volunteers.

He was an expert oarsman and was very familiar with every part of the river in this section, was careful and never took any chances, but this time he found the conditions changed and the current different, with fatal results. His family have the sympathy of a large number of friends in their loss.

ObituaryJan 17, 1935  OBITUARY: Robert W. Cline, 88, the oldest member of the Massena Methodist Episcopal church in years of service, died at his home on North Main Street Friday morning at about 11:00 o'clock after being in declining health for the past few months.

He was in fairly good health during the summer. He painted part of his house himself and drove his automobile. Two years ago this winter he was struck by an automobile while going to prayer services at the Methodist Episcopal church and although no bones were broken yet he was disable for some time.

Mr. Cline was born on Long Sault Island, August 25, 1846, a son of John and Anna Farlinger Cline. He attended the district school there until he was 17 years of age and them came to Massena to take up the blacksmith trade. He served his three years apprenticeship in the Horatio G. Clark shop, which stood at the corner of Main and Water Streets and conducted various shops by himself at Louisville Landing and Massena. About 25 years ago he bought the large lot at the corner of Maple and North Main Streets and built the buildings, which are now standing there, including his own residence.

Mr. Cline joined the Methodist Episcopal church when he was 22 years off age and has always been an ardent church worker. He has served as a trustee and as a Sunday school teacher and has been regarded as one of the most loyal members of the church.

Mr. Cline's hobby was fishing and rowing a boat and in the last few years he has spent considerable time on the St. Lawrence river. He was one of the most successful fishermen of his community.

In 1868 Mr. Cline married Miss Catherine Bush, who died 14 years later. To this union were born two sons and one daughter, Fred and Albert Cline and Mrs. Albert Dow. Fred Cline lives at South Newbury, Vt. Albert Cline died a couple of years ago and Mrs. Dow resides in Exeter, New Hampshire.

In 1882 he married Dora Boles, of Canada, who was making her home at that time with the G. A. Snaith family here. She died about eight years ago.

Miss Elizabeth Richards, a niece, has been caring for Mr. Cline for the last year. Mrs. H. C. Campbell, wife of Rev. H. C. Campbell who is pastor of the Little Falls Methodist Episcopal church, was in Massena visiting Mr. Cline at the time of his death. She was raised in the Cline home.

Two half-sisters and one half-brother also survive. They are Miss Harriet Cline and Willis W. Cline, both of Massena, and Mrs. John Wilcox, of Ogdensburg. Mr. Cline had seven brothers and sisters, all having pre-deceased him. The funeral services at the Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon were largely attended in spite of the weather which was practically a blizzard. Among those from a distance were Warner Kirk and Mr. and Mrs. Cameron, of Cornwall; and daughter, and son, Roy, of Ogdensburg, Mrs. Glenn Barnes, of West Potsdam; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Potter and son, of Bombay; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Grant, of Brasher Falls; Miss Dorothy Campbell, a student in Syracuse university. The immediate relatives were also present.

The services were conducted by Rev. Ray C. Ballard, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, assisted by Rev. Norman McLellan, retired Methodist pastor. Mr. McLellan said the prayer. In his sermon, Mr. Ballard emphasized the important part Mr. Cline had played in the life of the church. He told of 50 years that Mr. Cline had taught an adult class in the Sunday school, he mentioned that Mr. Cline had been a trustee ever since the church was built nearly 70years ago, he stated that Mr. Cline was the only remaining member of the congregation that helped Rev. J. B. Hammond, then pastor of the church, in the erection of the old church. Mr. Cline worked at his blacksmith shop for a share of the day and then would go to the Methodist church and work until dark. High praise was given to faithfulness in the church and of his loyal support of the various movements.

The body was placed in the new retaining vault in Pine Grove cemetery and will be placed in the cemetery in the spring.

ObituaryMar 29, 1933  OBITUARY: Mrs. Harriett C. Saunderson, widow of George W. Saunderson, for many ears head of the Lincoln High School English department, died last night, March 28, 1933, at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel. Mrs. Saunderson was 66 years old, had lived in Seattle thirty years and was prominent in dramatic and art circles. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ranier Chapter and of the Women’s Federated Clubs.

Four daughters survive: Mrs. Ruth S. Craig, wife of C.H. Craig, assistant secretary to Mayor John F. Dore; Mrs. Laura Bugge, Sequim; Mrs. Dorothy Redfield, Tacoma; and Mrs. Katherine George, St. Paul, Minn.

Funeral arrangements were being made at the Johnson & Hamilton Funeral Parlors.

ObituarySep 17, 1928  OBITUARY: GEORGE W. SAUNDERSON - Hundreds of residents of Seattle, pupils of George W. Saunderson during the twenty-six years he taught English in public schools here, today were mourning his death by his own hand at his home, 1146 23rd Ave. N.

Forced to retire from teaching by ill health last May, in a fit of despondency, Mr. Saunderson yesterday shot himself in the head with a revolver. He was 72 years old. His body was found by his son-in-law, Marion D. Redfield, who with his wife had come on a visit from their home in Tacoma.

Arriving in Seattle in 1902 from Ripon College, Wis., Mr. Saunderson first taught at Broadway High School and then at Lincoln High School, which he left this year when his condition grew worse.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Harriet C. Saunderson, and four daughters, Mrs. C. H. Craig of Seattle, Mrs. A. A. Bugge of Sequim, Mrs. W. J. George of St. Paul and Mrs. M. D. Redfield of Tacoma.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, Sept. 20, 1928, in the Plymouth Congregational Church, in which he was a deacon.
