ObituaryMar 15, 1938  OBITUARY: Albert Shiflett, thirty-nine, a farmer residing near Alberene, died at 5:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the University of Virginia Hospital from the effects of gun shot wounds in the chest self inflicted about 10 o'clock last Friday night, following his arrest by ABC officers on a liquor distilling charge. Taken into custody by the officers at his home on Friday, Shiflett made his escape after being permitted to go back into his house for a few personal possessions. He was rushed to the hospital here in a Scottsville ambulance, arriving at 2:30 o'clock Saturday morning and was operated upon at 4:30 that morning. He was a native of Greene County, son of the late Studavin and Polly (Frazier) Shiflett. He married Miss Mary Shiflett, of Alberene, who survives with four children, James, Ruth, Edna and Ralph Shiflett. He also leaves two brothers and three sisters -- Robert Harris Shiflett, of Crozet; Thomas Shiflett, of Baltimore; Mrs. Virgie Frazier, of Morgantown, W. Va; Mrs. Bertha Frazier of Brown's Cove, this county, and Mrs. Gertrude Shiflett, of Schuyler, Nelson County. The funeral will be held at 3:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the Mission Home, this county, near the Greene County line, the service to be conducted by the Rev. W. Roy Mason, D. D. of the Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the family plot at the Mission Home. The funeral party will leave the Hill & Irving Funeral Home at 2:30 o'clock.

ObituaryDec 26, 1957  OBITUARY: LISBON – Nathan P. McKown, 67, died Wednesday, Christmas evening at his Lisbon home. He had been in poor health for several months.

A native of Lisbon, he was a cabinet maker by trade and conducted his own cabinet shop. He was a member of Kane lodge, F&AM, of Lisbon and Temple Club of Littleton.

Members of the family included his wife, Mrs. Beatrice (Hurd) McKown; two sons, Kenneth H. McKown and Douglas P. McKown, both of Lisbon, and the late Sgt. Malcolm McKown, who was killed in World War II; two daughters, Mrs. Nathalie F. Morray of Thompsonville, Conn., and Mrs. Jocelyn A. Jamieson of Barnard, VT; and 11 grandchildren.

Private services will be held this afternoon at Pillsbury Funeral Home with Rev. Ashley Doan, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery, Lisbon.

Tonight, Thursday, December 26, 1957, members of Kane lodge, F and A.M. will conduct Masonic services at 8 o'clock at the Funeral Home.

ObituaryJan 8, 1959  OBITUARY: Funeral services were held from the Congregational Church on Tuesday, January 6, for Mrs. Nathan P. McKown (Beatrice Hurd McKown), who died at the Mary Hitchcock hospital in Hanover on Sunday morning after a long illness. Rev. Ashley Doane officiated and the organist was Mary Clough. Burial was in Grove Hill Cemetery. Bearers were George Goudie, George McGregor, Victor Snell, Percy Sweet, Charles Bishop and Waldo Dexter.

Mrs. McKown was born in Cornish on May 6, 1894, the daughter of Fred Hurd and Mary (Kenyon) Hurd. She attended schools in Cornish and Claremont High School. On June 6, 1914 she was married to Nathan P. McKown, who died last December. She had been a resident of Lisbon for 45 years.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth H. McKown and Douglas P. McKown of Lisbon; two daughters, Mrs. Jocelyn Jamieson of Bethel, VT and Mrs. Nathalie F. Murray of Thompsonville, CT; and 11 grandchildren. A third son, Sgt. Malcolm K McKown, was killed in action in World War II.

Mrs. McKown was a member of the Lisbon Congregational Church, Lafayette Chapter O.E.S, Past Matrons, Gold Star Mothers and the American Legion Auxiliary.

On Monday evening at the Pillsbury Funeral Home a service was conducted by the Gold Star Mothers and the O.E.S. Chapter service was held at 8 p.m. at The Legion auxiliary attended in a body.
