ObituaryApr 14, 2007  OBITUARY: VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Lt. George Edward Laber passed away April 11, 2007, at the home of his daughter in Virginia Beach. He was 80 years old. George Laber enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 from Haverhill, Mass., and advanced through the enlisted ranks to master chief petty officer in 15 years. He was a veteran of World War II, participating in the Normandy invasion and serving as a mine sweeping boatswain's mate during the Korean War. He trained as a mine sweeping boatswain mate in Yorktown, Va., and served aboard the USS Sturdy and later commanded a mine sweeper while stationed in Charleston, S.C.
He was selected for Officer Candidate School in 1960 and received his commission in Newport, R.I.
He served two tours in Vietnam, one aboard the USS Diamondhead as the ships first lieutenant and the other as an advisor to the River Rein Forces operating out of Bien Hoa, close to Saigon where he received the Bronze Star with combat "V" and other U.S. Navy citations.
He participated in the first manned space shot in 1961 and the first Polaris missile replenishment at sea with a submarine aboard the ARS Recovery. He also served as first lieutenant aboard the USS Betelgeuse.
While stationed at Little Creek, he served as an amphibious ships-shore movement instructor and later served as security officer to the Atlantic Communications Department at CINCLANTFLT.
After retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1972 with 30 years of distinguished military service, he went to work at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a nuclear pipefitter, retiring in 1993 after 20 years service.
George Laber was a born again Christian and a member of the Ocean View Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for several years. He attended Thursday evening bible study at the home of his daughter and a Friday evening bible study at the home of his son. He designed, created and donated a stain glass window which can still be seen at the entrance of the 9th Bay Baptist Church in Ocean View. He was a member of the Plus 60s Club, the Dixie Square Dance Club and a past president of the Square Dancers campers club.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen L. Laber of 34 years and his second wife, Barbara Jacobson Laber of 20 years.
His survivors include sisters, Thelma Little from North Andover, Mass., and Maryann, wife of Lionel Ackerman from Laconia, N.H; brother, Albert and his wife Marie, also known as "Wee" of Revere, Mass. Also surviving are his children: son, George Leonard Laber and his wife Sandra Kay of Virginia Beach and their three children, Jeremy Leonard Laber of Kansas City, Mo., Joshua Edward Laber and Heather Marie Laber, and her daughter, Autumn Genest; son, Thomas Edward Laber and his wife Rita Ann of Port Richey, Fla; daughter, Peggy M. Walker of Norfolk and her children, Richard Aaron Warren, and his son, Gabriel, Shannon and Jeff Tighe, and their daughters, Rochell, Azariah and Patricia; and daughter Jennifer Marie Warren of Alexandria, Va., and her sons, Brennt and Shaynne, and daughter, Breanna; daughter, Susan P. "Patti" and her husband Richard M. Jarrett of Virginia Beach and their children, Courtney Paige of Columbia, Md., and Noah Bridger and his wife Tammy; stepsons, John A. Jacobson and Michael K. Jacobson; and stepdaughter, Leilani and her husband Tommy Arthur, and her son, Max.
Dad will be greatly missed by his family and friends until the day that we are all together with Jesus in the end.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Ocean View Baptist Church by the Rev. James McLendon with a reception in the fellowship hall of the church from noon until 1 p.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

Members of the family include his wife, Mrs. Pearl LaBombard, five sons, Charles F. Laber of Walpole, Clarence E. Laber of Newport. Capt. Roger C. Laber of Newfoundland; Alfred W. Laber of Manchester, VT. A daughter Mrs. Jean Callum of Missoula MT, 16 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Military services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at the Newton Bartlett Funeral home, with the Rev. Walter Bartlett, pastor of the Church of the Good Shepherd officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon and evening. (1964)

He was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Bath to Frank and Martha (Powers) Brill.
He worked as a dairy farmer in Bath and Barton, Vt., for several years and at Ethan Allen in Orleans, Vt., before moving to Springfield, Vt., where he worked as a machinist for Bryant Grinder until retiring.
After retirement, he lived in Orleans for several years before moving to Londonderry, where he met his future wife and married on Jan. 11, 1997. They resided in Waterboro, Maine, until spring of this year, when they moved to Woodsville.
He was a host at Dolly Copp Campground in Pinkham Notch for the past three years.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marilyn (Labor) Brill, as well as by an infant son and daughter.
Family includes his wife, Phila E. (Nelson) Howard Brill of Woodsville; daughters Rhonda Therrien and Melodie Brill, both of Manchester; two grandchildren; sisters Goldie Greenwood and Etta Hooker, both of Lincoln; nieces and nephews; stepchildren Danny Howard of Pembroke, Barbara Costantino of Florida and Newfoundland, Penny Howard of Manchester and Nancy Tarr of Allenstown; four step-grandchildren and two step-great-granddaughters

SERVICES: Calling hours are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. in Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville.
A service is Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Charles Storey of Free Baptist Church in East Waterboro, Maine, officiating.
A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. in Pleasant View Cemetery, Orleans, Vt.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Manchester office, 249 Canal St., Manchester 03101.
