| Obituary | Oct 24, 2013 | OBITUARY: Madeleine Homer Byrum McNatt, 95, of Fredericksburg, VA, formerly of Winston-Salem, NC, died October 17, 2013. She was born to the late Milton Homer Byrum and Inez Madeline Hoffler Byrum on January 29, 1918, in Sunbury, NC. Madeleine graduated Valedictorian from Sunbury High School in 1935, and received an AB in History and English from East Carolina Teachers' College (now East Carolina University) in 1939. She received an MA in Education in School Librarianship from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1968. She married the late Charles Daniel McNatt in 1941. After Charles was discharged from the Army at the end of World War II, they moved to Winston-Salem to raise their family. Madeleine moved from Winston-Salem to Fredericksburg in 2012. Madeleine taught English at Stedman (NC) High School, and at Griffith High School in Winston-Salem. Her love of books led her to become the Librarian at Griffith Junior High, a position she held for 25 years until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa , an honorary organization of women educators. Madeleine was a faithful member of The First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, was a long-time member of Class 17, and was church librarian. She was an active Circle 6 member and member of the Women of the Church. Madeleine was a long-time member of the Old Town Women's Club, and a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was a fantastic Southern cook and enjoyed flower arranging and reading. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-grandmother. She is survived by her sister, Emily Byrum Oliver of Fredericksburg; her two sons, Charles Milton McNatt and wife Trudy Brown McNatt of Fredericksburg, and James Daniel McNatt and wife Donna Dragon McNatt of Winston-Salem; her four grandchildren, Heather Lynn McNatt of Charlotte, Regan Allison McNatt Sebring and husband Scott Hadley Sebring of Olympia, WA, James Daniel McNatt, Jr. of Berkeley, CA, and Alexandra Margaret McNatt of New York City; and her two great-grandchildren, Quinn Riley Sebring (3 years old) and Natalie Renee Sebring (1 year old). The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday October 27 at Frank Vogler and Sons on Reynolda Rd. in Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday October 28 at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Mike Horne. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Beulah Baptist Church, 967 U.S. 158, Sunbury, NC 27979 or to the Women of the Church, First Presbyterian Church, 300 N. | Obituary | Dec 31, 2012 | OBITUARY: Willie Hurley Hofler, Jr., 94, of Kill Devil Hills, died on Sunday, December 30, 2012 at his residence. Mr.Hofler was retired from the NC State Highway Dept. after 30 years of service. His work brought him to Manteo in the late 50's, where he resided with his family for twelve years. He was transferred to another area, but moved back to Manteo after retirement. He lived in Manteo with his wife, Ida Matthews Hofler, now deceased, until they moved to Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Kill Devil Hills, where he lived until his death. Mr. Hofler was very active in the Methodist Church until his return to Manteo after retirement. He then joined First Assembly of God in Manteo.
Mr. Hofler is survived by two daughters, Betty H. Perry and husband, Ron of Nashville, TN, and Linda H. Tillett and husband, Saint, of Manteo, NC; one sister, Marie Hofler and one brother, Willard Hofler; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Steve Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Miss Hofler was born in Gates County on Dec. 13, 1919, and was the daughter of the late Willie H., Sr. and Lucy Byrum Hofler. A retired clerk from the former Rountree and Riddick General Merchandise in Sunbury, she had attended both Damascus and Oak Grove Christian Churches. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Nell Hofler and Elizabeth Elmore; and by her brother, Willie H. Hofler Jr. and wife, Ida Perry Hofler. Surviving are her brother, Willard Hofler and wife, Naomi, of Elizabeth City; special family members and friends, Carole Bass and husband, Ronnie, Jeanette Floyd, Linda Tillett and husband, Saint Clair, Betty Perry and husband, Ron, and Ellen Willard and husband, Charles; her brother-in-law, Alton Elmore; and many other extended family members and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, by Pastor John A. Hilts Sr. A private burial will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the chapel service on Saturday, and all other times at the residence. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, John Elmer Perry, Jr., a son, Johnny Vaughan Perry, a sister, Nell Hofler, a son-in-law, Dodd "Sonny" Floyd, and a grandson, Alan Dean Perry. Surviving are her husband, Alton G. Elmore; children, Jeanette Perry Floyd of Hobbsville, Carole Perry Bass and husband, Ronnie, of Edenton, Kimberly Elmore Cooper and husband, Gary, of Elizabeth City; and Kel Elmore and wife, Kathleen, of Edenton; a sister, Marie Hofler of Sunbury; two brothers, Will Hofler of Kill Devil Hills and Willard Hofler of Elizabeth City; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in Edenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks and Dr. Kenneth Word. A private burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends joined the family Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the residence. Mr. Byrum, a native of Gates County, was a past president of Farmer's Bank of Sunbury, now First Citizens Bank, and served on its local board of directors. He was a charter member of the Sunbury Ruritan Club and a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Estelle Hooks Byrum; a daughter, Betty B. Lilley of Alexandria, Va; a son, Dr. G.V. Byrum of Scotland Neck; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is handling arrangements.

She was born in Wayne County, N.C. The daughter of the late Barden Vance and Mrs. Ida Garriss Hooks, she was a former teacher in the Nashville, N.C., and Sunbury schools. A graduate of Salem College in Winston-Salem in 1924, she was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church, Sunbury, and its United Methodist Women. She was a former member of Sunbury Women's Club. She was the wife of the lane William Graham Byrum.
Surviving are one daughter, Betty Lilley and her husband, MG (Ret.) Aaron L. Lilley Jr. of Alexandria, Va; one son, Dr. G. Vance Byrum and his wife, Betty Jean Byrum of Scotland Neck, N.C; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Philadelphia United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lisa Creech Bledsoe. Burial will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to one's favorite charity.
