Mrs. Hoffler was a lifelong member of Beulah Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union.
Survivors include her children, Sally Ann Hoffler Eure of Harrisburg, NC, Marvin L. Hoffler of Smithfield, Rose Hoffler Robinson of Jacksonville and Louise Hoffler Ellis of Raleigh; a brother, Frank Rice of Sunbury; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A life celebration service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Cockrell and the Rev. Ron Parr.
Burial will be in the Cross family cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church social hall.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Beulah Baptist Church, 967 US Highway 158 E, Sunbury, NC 27979 or to the IOW Volunteer Rescue, PO Box 97, Smithfield, VA 23431. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is in charge.

Mrs. Rice was born in Gates County. The daughter of the late Roger V. Sr. and Mrs. Mary Gwaltney Knight, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and its Mary Magdalene Sunday School Class. She was the wife of the late Paul Hugh Rice Sr.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathryn R. Keen of Virginia Beach, and Mary Layne Johnson of Suffolk; three sisters, Elizabeth Raby and Virginia Blair, both of Portsmouth, and Janice Williams of Lake Jackson, Texas; two brothers, Leon Knight of Corapeake, N.C., and Roger Judson Knight of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, William R. Keen IV, David L. Keen, Susan K. John, Robert E. Byrum, and Richard Byrum; and one great-grandchild, Mason Keen. She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Hugh Rice Jr.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Ron Parr. Burial will follow in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery, with Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, in charge. Friends may join the family following the service in the social hall of Beulah Baptist Church and all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Paul and Ruth Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund, Beulah Baptist Church, Sunbury, N.C. 27979.

A native of Sunbury, N.C., she was the widow of Noel M. Hobbs and a retired homemaker/seamstress. Mrs. Hobbs was a member of South Norfolk Baptist Church, where she served many years as a Sunday school teacher, was WMU president and Southside WMU group leader.
Survivors include three daughters, Anita Matteson and husband Burton J. Matteson III of Virginia Beach, Dorothy Hackworth and husband Charles G. Hackworth of Chesapeake and Christine Ussery and husband Joe W. Ussery Jr. of Chesapeake; a sister, Edna R. Hoffler of Sunbury, N.C; a brother, Frank L. Rice and wife Frances Rice of Sunbury; eight grandchildren, Beth M. Davis, Charles G. Hackworth II, David A. Hackworth, Burton J. Matteson IV, Cynthia U. Fryar, Joe W. Ussery III, Meredith L. Ussery and Jennifer M. Ussery; eight great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Mike Norman. She was predeceased by her parents, Annie Byrum Rice and Hugh L. Rice.
A funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in South Norfolk Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Hughes and Dr. A. Wayne Cook. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk. Visitation will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel. The family will be at 3707 Sandpiper Lane, Chesapeake, at all other times.
Memorial donations may be made to South Norfolk Baptist Church Renovation Fund or Comfort Care Hospice, 667 Kingsborough Square No. 202, Chesapeake, VA 23320.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in South Norfolk Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Frank Hughes, Dr. Dennis R. Culbreth and the Rev. Penny Wilson. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk. Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday and at other times at 3707 Sandpiper Lane, Chesapeake.
