Researcher's Note* Thompson is a derivation of 'Thomas,' which is Aramaic. More than likely it is a baptismal name taken from the son of Thomas? It could also be a Norman post conquest personal name.

The English home of John Thompson of this sketch is thought to be from London but not known for certain. Thompson, being a very popular surname, is found scattered throughout every corner ofEngland, United Kingdom, from very early times. Several genealogists claim he was related to the three Thompson brothers who settled in New Haven. This is quite possible as their Grandfather had sons, Henry and Thomas, who each named three of their sons, John, Anthony and William.

John Thompson may have been the son of John Thompson b. 30 Jan 1576/77 in Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England, United Kingdom and Alice Freeman, from there too. They resided in London and had 10 children.

No less than seven John Thompson's emigrated to America fromEngland, United Kingdom, during a span of about fifteen years 1628-1640. Three early Thompson families settled in New Haven in the mid seventeenth Century-being the brothers John, Anthony, and William Thompson of whom William died without issue. There was also another John and William Thompson who settled here about the same time and thought to be related to the first three brothers. The John of this sketch resided in the suburb of New Haven called East Haven with his wife Dorothy. It is tantalizing to think that the John Thompson of this sketch, came to New England, United Kingdom at the age of 22, aboard the ship 'Elizabeth and Ann,' in May 1635, with one hundred and two passengers, of which many settled at New Haven. Donald L. Jacobus, noted genealogist, studied the Thompson families of Connecticut and claims that the John Thompson of this sketch is not related to the previous mentioned brothers but often confused.

Two John Thompson's signed the Connecticut Constitution, (charter) the first time on June 4, 1639 and the other signed a revised edition on Feb. 7, 1657. On various Connecticut Colony records, there have been unsettled controversies over which mentioned John Thompson pertains to a particular person on NewEngland, United Kingdom records. This ranges from his English patronymics to the naming of his wife and children, and separating sons, fathers, brothers, and cousins. This has caused an enigma for genealogists.

Apparently John left no recorded will and shortly after his death his estate was inventoried in 1655, indicating this was the year of his death. On 27 Jan. 1671, his children made application for a distribution of his estate and mention their father-in-law as the custodian.1

ObituaryJan 18, 2004  OBITUARY: Mecklenburg NC - Margaret Snow Schilling, a resident of Sunrise Living in Charlotte, N.C., passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2004. She was born June 9, 1914, in Brewster, Mass. Lovingly called "Non" by her family and friends, Mrs. Schilling celebrated life, love, family, friends, art and the sea.

An accomplished professional painter, Mrs. Schilling was passionate about art and loved it in all of its forms. She began her art education at age 13 upon winning a scholarship to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she studied for five years. After graduating from the Massachusetts College of Art, she worked in advertising and design in New York City.

While living in Darien, Conn., she studied the new movements in painting technique and philosophy at Silvermine Guild of Art and later with Theodoros Stamos, the noted Abstract Expressionist.
A former resident of LaGrange, Ga., where she is primarily known for her portraits, Mrs. Schilling was an original founder of the Chattahoochee Valley Art Association. Over the years, she experimented in many painting styles, which emphasized the joyous moments in life - especially the world of children. Her portraits captured the essence and spirit of the many who sought her work. She worked in her studio in New York City and summered in Watch Hill, R.I.

Mrs. Schilling is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Joseph V. Schilling, son Lee H. Schilling and his wife Sharon, and daughter Linda S. Martine and husband Layng, and Peggy Schilling Regan and husband Charles. The family also includes 13 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many great friends.

In keeping with her wishes, Mrs. Schilling will be cremated, with her ashes to be spread over the ocean at a memorial service to be held this summer at the Watch Hill Chapel in Watch Hill, R.I. A date has yet to be set.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that gifts be sent to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, N.C. 28204, in memory of Marge Schilling.

ObituaryDec 10, 1953  OBITUARY: PULLMAN, WA., Dec. 11, 1953 – Funeral services were held this afternoon at Kimball Funeral Home for Harry Kendall, 71, president and business agent for the Pullman-Moscow painters Local No. 1726.

Mr. Kendall died in his room some time Tuesday at the Russel Hotel, where he made his home. The body was found by Ted Dillon, who also rooms at the hotel. Both police and a local physician pronounced the death due to natural causes.

Mr. Kendall was born October 19, 1882, in Vermont and had lived in Pullman nine years, coming here from Pomeroy. He was a Spanish-American War veteran, having served in the Philippines for three years.

Services were conducted by the Rev. William Gamble of Greystone Presbyterian Church. Burial with military honors took place in the cemetery, with a firing squad provided by Company E of the 161st infantry regiment.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Kendall, of Pomeroy; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Thomaier of Seattle; a sister, Mrs. Stella Hall of Seattle; and a brother, Guy Kendall of Alturas, CA. The latter arrived in time for the services and joined Mrs. Kendall and her father, A. L. Cabbage of Pomeroy.
