Bowles was born at Lisbon, New Hampshire, on January 27th, 1816, and died at his home in Dell Rapids, S.D., on Tuesday, January 20, 1903, having thus gone almost seventeen years beyond the allotted period of three score years and ten. Had he lived but one short week more he would have gone home on his eighty-seventh birthday.
He was married to Mary Cooley in March, 1840, and for 63 years they traveled life's journey together, sharing with each other the joys and blessings of a happy home life, bearing together the burden and heat of the day, resting in the evening of life in the sweet consciousness of having walked with God, realizing by happy experience God's Promise.

"E'en down to old age my people shall prove Sovereign, Eternal, Unchangeable Love, when hoary hairs shall their temples adornlambs they shall still on my bosom be borne"
In 1827 they left their home in New Hampshire and moved with their family to Wisconsin, settling at Janesville. They remained in Wisconsin until 1884 when they came to South Dakota and settled in Dell Rapids Township, finally coming to town to live in October, 1895.
Four children were born to them, two of whom, Mellie and James, have preceded him to the better land. Two sons are still living, O.F. Bowles, of Dell Rapids and C.E. Bowles, of Janesville, Wisconsin.
Very early in life Mr. Bowles united with the Free Will Baptist Church, remaining a member of the same until they came to Janseville, when he with his wife became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which, he was a faithful, consistent member until his death. Although unable to come to church for the last four or five years, his love of the church and religious services never grew cold. He believed in the ultimate success and triumph of his Redeemer's Kingdom and not only believed and prayed, but he put his faith and prayers into practical operation and brotherly helpfulness in the cause of his Master.
He was at times during the last two months an intense sufferer but bore it all with Christian fortitude and resignation and as the end drew near, while still anxious to stay, he was still more anxious to go, knowing that to depart and be with Christ was far better.
It may truly be said of him that one of earth's uncrowned kings, who chose rather to love mercy and to walk humbly with his God, has laid by his earthly vestments and gone out with the apostles to be forever with Lord.
May the everlasting arms of the Father be underneath his sorrowing companion, and comfort and bless the mourning sons and relatives.

Funeral service held yesterday, Jan 22, 1903, at 2pm. at the M.E. Church, Tev. R.B.officiating.

ObituaryMay 20, 2010  OBITUARY: COLCHESTER - Douglas M. Crowley, 79, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 after a short illness.

He was surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was born in Burlington, on Nov. 15, 1930 to Paul & Bertha Crowley.

He married Mary Hall on Nov. 27, 1954 in Colchester and then resided in Winooski almost all of his life and recently in Colchester next to his loving daughter Sandra.

He was first employed at Green Mountain Power and then for 37 years at Vermont Gas Systems where he worked until his retirement. Doug's large family was his pride and joy. He was a sports enthusiast and especially loved his Atlanta Braves & Boston Bruins. He was a softball coach in Winooski for many years and loved ice fishing and hunting with many of his close friends and family. His favorite hobby was gardening, especially his summertime tomatoes. Doug was a Senior Master Sergeant in the US Air Force National Guard for 43 years and a Fireman for 25 years in the Winooski Fire Department. He was a dedicated supporter of St. Francis Xavier Parish and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Doug is survived by his four children, Allyson and her husband Francis Webster of Orlando, Fla., Sandra and her husband Norman Thibault of Colchester, Vanessa and her partner Dale Knowles of Charlotte, and Thomas and his partner Justin Lawrence of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Doug is also survived by his grandchildren, Brittany, Brandon & Bryan Thibault of Colchester, Ryan Webster of Orlando, Fla., Melissa & Gary Badore of Burlington; and great-grandchild, Logan Badore of Burlington. Doug is survived by eight brothers and sisters, Paul Sr. of Phoenix, Ariz., Louise, Charles and his wife Pauline of Winooski, Duane and his wife Shirley of Colchester, John of Barton, Madeline (Babe) and her husband Gary Morenus, George of Winooski, and Glen of South Burlington; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Fleming of Burlington, Deborah Brodeur and her husband Steven, and Sharon Brigham and her husband Todd of Fairfax; and brother-in-law Robert Letourneau of Longs, S.C. Doug is also survived by several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Doug was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary, in 1990; son, William, in 1991; his brother, Leonard; sisters, Margaret, Judith and Connie; and also his sister in-law, Lynn.

The family wishes to express their great appreciation for the loving care Doug received from the doctors and staff of Starr Farm Rehab Center and Fletcher Allen Hospital.

Family visiting hours will be held at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main Street, Winooski on Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 7 to 9 p.m., and Public visiting hours will be on Friday, May 21, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church in Winooski on Saturday, May 22nd at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery with full Military and Fire department honors. A family and friends reception will then follow at the VFW in Winooski.
