ObituaryJun 1, 1983  OBITUARY: A Mass of Christian Burial for Robert Harding Rose, a retired patent examiner, was offered Saturday, May 27, 1983, at St. Mary’s Church in Annapolis.

Mr. Rose, who was 76 and lived in Bay Ridge since the mid-1930s, died last Wednesday after a short illness at Anne Arundel General Hospital.

He retired in 1966 as a supervisory primary patent examiner in the Patent Office in Washington. A specialist in patents on electronic devices, he had been a patent examiner since 11930.

During World War II, he served as an officer in Naval Intelligence and retired in 1959 from a Naval Reserve unit in Washington as a commander.

A native of Washington, he obtained a degree in electrical engineering from Catholic University in 11929 and graduated from the Georgetown University Law School in 1935.

He was a member of the board of Bay Ridge Civic Association, which he served as a vice president and, for many years, as treasurer.

Fond of motor-boating on the Chesapeake Bay, he was a member of the United States Power Squadron.

As a young man, he was active as an amateur radio operator and was a member of the American Radio Relay League.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Wittler.

She writes in part:
"...I dont know much about his family , he had a younger brother James Olney. He came to the White Bird, Idaho country when I was about 9 years old...."
"...when my grandfather (Benjamin E. OLNEY) was a young man he learned the trade of millering and after they moved to Idaho he worked his trade making flour for the early settlers. This mill was between Genessee and Juliaetta, Idaho.
"...my grandfather was married three times. I don't know who his first wife was but he was married young.
They had 4 children- James and Elisebeth- I knew both of them. One boy, I dont know his name, was drown in a irrigation ditch or canal. He was 7 or 8 years old and he was ice skating on the canal with his brother James. The ice wasnt thick enough to hold his weight, when James saw his brother break through the ice he run to tell their mother. The mother was in bed with her 3 day old baby girl.. The mother got out of bed and run in her night dress and bare feet to help. When she layed down on the ice the ice broke and she went into the water. They found her with her sons ankle clasp tightly in her hand...." "...grandpa named the baby girl Diantha...."
His youngest son, by his first marriage, was 8 years old when he and his mother fell into the water and drown. Sometime after that he married Emily Taylor and she passed away in 1877. His third marriage, to Mary Ann Ray would have been after 1877.
As I indicated before the State of Kansas was a guess on her part. She also wrote "...I dont know where the family lived at that time. But I think Kansas...."

I have located Benjamin Olney on the 1860 KS Census, Lykins County. Living in the home are three young children (James, Dyntha, and Rachel). Also living in the home is Betsy who is age 62. Since Benjamin is age 33 on this census, Betsy presumably is his mother. The census indicates Benjamin and Betsy were both born in VT.

I have located Laura Olney (b1869 MO) on the 1870 MO Census, Hickory Co., Stark Township living in the home of her father (Benjamin Olney) and mother (Emily). This census indicates Benjamin was born in VT. Based on the 1870 MO Census for Hickory County that would have made Emily 15 yrs of age at the time she married Benjamin OLNEY. I do not know how old she was when she married her first husband, SNELL.

I have located Laura Olney (b1869 MO) on the 1880 OR Census, Linn Co., Brownsville Precinct living in the home of her father (Benjamin Olney) and step-mother (Mary). This census indicates Benjamin was born in VT.

The Provence of Quebec, called Lower Canada, and settled near Shipton (near Danville) where the land is very good. John Nutting had married Rachel Olney and moved about 1805. Between 1810 and 1820 a cloudburst whipped (wiped) out everything along the Black River and people moved out. Abraham, along with his youngest son, went "West", probably New York, between 1810-1820. Benjamin was still in Springfield in 1820 but by 1825 in Canada. The 1825 Census of Shipton shows Benjamin Eseck Olney; John Nutting and others of our relatives. More research needs to be done on these families in Shipton township. In 1851, there was only Esec Olney, farmer, age 53, and Betsey Olney, age 54, and Rachel Nutting (widow), age 77 living on the 50 acre farm. They had a 1 1/2 store (story) frame house. The boys were gone. John married and living in Billerica, Mass., where he had a greenhouse, Benjamin E. married, and James Andrew (still going by the name of Andrew) at the Calfornia Gold rush. In 1860 Benjamin E. is living in Osawatomia (Then Lykinsco) Miami Co., Kansa with his three children, James, Dynthia, Rachel and his mother Betsey Olney. His wife and son Allen drown. In 1861 James Andrew, back from the Gold rush was in Linn County volunteering as a soldier in the Civil War. By 1865 they had vanished. Ben was in Ore. before 1880. James Andrew, cleared on a homestead in Kansas and came to Ritzville, Wash. in 1891. John died in 1894-so James Andrew Olney was the last of his generation died 1908 in Spokane, buried at Ritzville in the Soldier's plot.

Fix Ridge Cemetery, Latah County, Idaho Contributed by Maggie Rail, Aug 03, 2000 (mrail@pacnw.com). According to the book "Early & Present History of Fix Ridge, 1877-1964," Fix Ridge cemetery came into being after the murder of Charley Headrick. Theodore Schetzle donated an acre of land for a cemetery following the death of his wife and this murder, which were about the same time. In addition to this Fred Ernest donated an acre, making it possible to have the first cemetery in the Fix Ridge area. Using the death date of Mrs Schetzle this means it started about 1893. Fix Ridge Cemetery is west of Juliaetta Idaho,from the Genesee-Juliaetta Rd turn south onto the Dennler Loop Rd, drive about 1/2 mile and you will come to the cemetery. Then they returned in 1904 to Cottonwood Creek again. In 1912 they left Cottomwood Creek by covered wagon to Okanogan County, Washington, where they lived for eight years. In 1919 George took sick and they moved to Spokane. He passed away January 11, 1920. They had five children; Hazel Gertrude Sprague Boyes born on June 24, 1901; Gladys Sarah Sprague Kratz Gust born on June 19, 1905; Inez Mary Sprague Brown born on January 15, 1907; Vernon George Sprague born on December 9, 1909 and John Henry Sprague born on August 19, 1911; 12 grandchildren, and 39 great-grandchildren. All but three of the great-grandchildren are living. Gertrude Olney Sprague passed away on February 19, 1965.
