ObituaryJul 28, 2011  OBITUARY: Elaine Woodworth Welch Derry, 89, a lifelong resident of the Northeast Kingdom, died on Wednesday, July 27, surrounded by her family at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton.

Born January 4, 1922, in St. Johnsbury, she was a daughter of Lyle S. and Ruby D. (Bowden) Woodworth.

Mrs. Derry graduated from Lyndon Institute, Class of 1940. She married Laurence S. Welch in December 1944. She met him while taking flying lessons. To this union, three children were born. She and Mr. Welch later divorced. She married Gerald E. Derry on October 28, 1968. He predeceased her on June 4, 2006.

Mrs. Derry worked for many area businesses, including as a receptionist at Brightlook Hospital, as a newspaper route driver for the Caledonian-Record, as a bookkeeper for Koppers Company, and later for J. and J. Lumber in East Burke. She and Mr. Derry owned and operated a bed and breakfast in East Burke for many years, accommodating skiers and snowmobilers. She enjoyed flowers (especially gladiolas) and birds (especially chickadees). She loved all animals and had several favorites through the years. She frequently spoke of Sandy, a quarter horse she owned many years ago. An artistic person, Mrs. Derry was often called upon to design and paint posters for community events. She was a strict grammarian who insisted her children learn often-overlooked subtleties of English language usage, including the proper verb tense and the difference between subjective and objective pronoun forms. She was an enthusiastic and very competent proofreader, and she delighted in both the discovery of the occasional double entendre and in the creation of her own.

Mrs. Derry is survived by her children and their spouses: Lauren "Joe" and Anne Welch of East Burke, Lyle "Jerry" and Lynn Welch of West Burke, Laurelie and Dennis Chapman of Fairbanks, Arkansas; two grandsons: Corey Welch of Waterbury and Jeffrey and Robin Welch of Scotts Mills, Oregon; three great-grandchildren: Austin Welch, Kyla Welch, and Carter Welch; two stepsons: Reginald and Kay Welch of Lyndonville, and Richard and Ruth Welch of East Burke; a sister, Shirley Renner, of Durham, New Hampshire; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Woodworth of Lebanon, Maine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother and father, Mrs. Derry was predeceased by two brothers, Dale and Donald Woodworth; a half-brother, Carlton Woodworth; and her stepmother, Lillian Woodworth.

A graveside service was held in the Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke on July 29 with the Reverend Christina Findlay officiating.

Helen was a lifelong area resident and was educated in the local school system. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and loved spending time with her family.

She is predeceased by her husband, Leslie E. Derry in 2003, and four siblings, Ralph Perkins, Richard Perkins, Phyllis E. Haskell and Elizabeth Haskins.

She is survived by three daughters, Carol J. Isham and her husband Stan of Plattsmouth, NE, Barbara A. Lewis and her husband Tom of Alexandria, VA, and Kathleen M. Marden and her husband Bob of Evington, VA; a son, Leslie "Skip" E. Derry, Jr. and his wife Kristen of Townshend, VT; two brothers, Philip R. Perkins and his wife Pat of Brattleboro and Roger L. Perkins and his wife Freida also of Brattleboro; two sisters, Isabel E. Madore of Dummerston, VT, and Nancy G.
