ObituaryMar 7, 2003  OBITUARY: MONTGOMERY CENTER - Gyneth Mae Lumbra, age 78, a lifelong resident of Montgomery Center, died Thursday evening, March 6, 2003, at Terrace Health Care in Burlington after a long battle with diabetes.

She was born March 16, 1924, in East Berkshire, the daughter of the late William and Ethel (Stetson) Brooks.

Her early education was in Montgomery Center. She attended Burlington High School on the Edna Eliza Curtin Scholarship, graduating in 1942. She then attended Johnson Normal School for two years. She received her BA from Johnson State College later in life.

On Nov. 18, 1943, she married Roland F. Lumbra, who predeceased her in 1982.

Gyneth was a teacher in the Montgomery School District for 46 years. In 1972 she became a teaching principal. Gyneth loved children and she continued to work as a substitute after she retired, contributing 52 years to education. In 1974 she became a member of the Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. During summers, Gyneth and Roland enjoyed their camp at Lake Eden. After his death, she took pleasure in traveling with Wilbur and Margaretta Branthover.

She was a lifelong parishioner of the Community Baptist Church in Montgomery Center, where she began teaching Sunday school in 1946. She was also an active member of the Montgomery Historical Society. After surviving cancer, she became a volunteer for the Cancer Society's Reach for Recovery program.

She is survived by a song and daughter-in-law, Earl and Nancy Lumbra of Montgomery Center; two grandchildren, Samantha Lumbra of Manchester, N.H., and Adam Lumbra of Montgomery Center; a sister and her husband, Beverly and Everett Poirier of Montgomery Center' a brother-in-law, Barney Malone of Enosburg; several nieces, nephews and their families; many friends and former students, her first-grade teacher and dearest friend, Mrs. Irene Scott. She was predeceased by a sister, Juanita Malone, in 2002.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Montgomery Center Community Baptist Church. Interment will be this spring in the Montgomery Center Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Sunday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. at Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

Duffy survived and was taken prisoner, but subsequently died in a Japanese prison fire when the guards refused to release the POWs from their burning cells.
