| Obituary | Apr 30, 2013 | OBITUARY: Dorothy Byrum Hobbs of Corapeake, NC died in the home of her daughter Sunday, April 28th after a prolonged respiratory illness. She was the daughter of Sallie and Moses Byrum of Sunbury, N.C. and had three sisters, one living, Mary Lucy Nichols of Charleston, S.C., and two deceased, Margaret Bradshaw and Thelma Head.
Dot , as she was called by many of her friends, came to Sunbury at age 14 from Norfolk, Virginia. She moved back to family farm with her family and finished high school at Sunbury High School after her father suffered a nearly fatal stroke. Later she joined the wartime Nurse Cadet program started by President Roosevelt and graduated as an RN from Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing. She was a tiny nurse in starched cap and long blue wool cape at graduation. On weekends she showed her exceptional dancing abilities at the USO on Granby street, dancing with GI’s and waiting for her guy to return from wartime on the Atlantic.
He did return and soon after she married her childhood sweetheart, Graham Columbus Hobbs, Jr. and they shared a love of big band music, the Outer Banks , and country living with their three children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.working to assist deliveries at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, Dot agreed to return to the Hobbs Family Farm on the edge of the Dismal Swamp in the Holly Grove community of Gates County. She did not relish the quiet, endless starry nights of the swamp and the ill equipped 1800’s farmhouse, but she later grew to love the very place so much she said she couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.
Her community knew her for her kindness to the many who were sick and called on her for advice and professional nursing care. Her church, St Peter’s Episcopal in Sunbury, delighted in her quick humor, lilting laugh, and god could she make a chocolate pie! Every corn pudding, and fajoli soup, and bowl of piquant cheese was devoured by the lovers of good food and Dot Hobbs. She was an avid knitter, and reader and was shameless in her love of All My Children, Young and the Restless and British comedies. Not surprisingly, she could always pick the best and worst dancers on Dancing With the Stars much better than the real judges. She is also survived by Graham, her husband of 64 years, and her children and their spouses: Donna and Michael Conner, Chuck and Phyllis Hobbs of Hobbs Lane in Corapeake and Gail and Daniel Page of Esmont, Virgina. Her grandchildren and their families will miss her unconditional love and counsel : Jeremy Conner and his wife Julie, and their children Joseph, Warren, and Audrey of Seattle, Washington; Amanda Conner and Meredith Conner of Rochester NY; Jane Elizabeth Turney and her husband ,Tony of Suffolk Virginia, and Graham Carter Hobbs who is attending Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC. In addition she is survived by her sister- in- law Ella Thomas Craig of Anchorage, Alaska and several nieces and nephews. Her dedication to her children and grandchildren and the care of her husband were the focus of her life .
There will be no public funeral by request of the deceased. A family visitation will be held at the Hobbs home place at 130 Hobbs Lane on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 3:00 to 6:00 p. m. The following day a private gathering for immediate family only will include celebratory food from Dot’s own recipe collection, and the scattering of her ashes under a beloved Beech tree, chosen by Dot and Graham on the family farm.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Sunbury , N.C. 27926 and Albemarle Hospice 311 Cedar St, Elizabeth City NC 27907 or

| Obituary* | Sep 26, 2016 | OBITUARY: Corapeake – Graham Columbus Hobbs, Jr. aged 91, passed away quietly at Elizabeth City Health and Rehab, formerly known as Winslow Memorial on September 24th, 2016. Mr. Hobbs was a lifetime resident of Corapeake, North Carolina and lived his long life on the family farm on Hobbs Lane before his health forced him to move to the facility. Born in the dining room of the farm house of his father and mother in 1925, he was the youngest of five children. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Byrum Hobbs, his parents, Eva Barnes Hobbs and Graham C. Hobbs Sr., his brother, Elmer Jarvis Hobbs, sisters, Conrad Hobbs Parish, and Jessie Hobbs Johnsen. His only living sibling is Ella Thomas Hobbs Craig of Anchorage, Alaska where she lives with her three children and their families.
He was a farmer for many years and hated to give it up when economics made that inevitable. Later working over 25 years at the Newport News Ship Yard he retired and spent many happy years hunting deer and fishing the Pasquotank and Chowan Rivers with his son, Chuck and his grandson, Jeremy. He loved the Outer Banks and could honestly catch fish when no one else could find one. He and Dot loved Kitty Hawk and Rodanthe and camped and enjoyed the ocean where they had spent their honeymoon back in 1948. He loved to steam crabs and fry fish and then surf cast at dawn and dusk. His gardening skills were legendary and he kept his father’s standards in his mind as he wielded a hoe. The garden bounty and fish and game he grew and cooked were shared with all his neighbors and co- workers as long as he lived at home and he taught his children his love of nature and cooking delicious food.
In final years his battle with dementia was fought with such grace and kindness and humor that the last enduring lesson he left his family rests there. He kept his humor right to the end even when the memories failed him, and his caretakers and roommates learned the wisdom and wit of a remarkable life well lived.
He is survived by his daughter, Donna Hobbs Conner and her husband Michael, his son, Graham C. Hobbs, III ( Chuck) and his wife Phyllis , all of Hobbs Lane, Corapeake, NC and his daughter, Gail Hobbs Page and her husband Daniel of Esmont ,Va. His grandchildren are Jeremy Andrew Conner of Seattle , Washington, and his wife Julie Tobiason and great-grandchildren Audrey and Warren. His granddaughters are Amanda Catherine Conner of Portsmouth, Va. , Meredith Ann Conner of Portsmouth, Va. and Jane Elizabeth Turney and husband Tony of Suffolk, Va. His youngest grandson and namesake, Graham Carter Hobbs currently resides in Huntington, West Va. where he is assistant football coach for Marshall.
A visitation with family and friends for the public will be at Miller Funeral Home in Gatesville, NC on Wednesday, the 28th from 6:30 til 8:00 p.m. Subsequently the immediate family will scatter his ashes at the farm by a beech tree along side his wife and celebrate his life and lessons. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/donate). Many thanks to the kindness of nurses and staff at Winslow’s who provided such care and love.

The body was removed to the James V. Derry Funeral Chapel.

A native of Chowan County, Mrs. Hofler was a daughter of the late Eli T. and Ida Pierce Byrum and the wife of the late Luther Hofler. Mrs. Hofler was a member of the Rocky Hock Baptist Church and was retired from the Davis Jewelers Company in Edenton. Surviving Mrs. Hofler is her son-in-law, Marion Cash of Tarboro; a sister, Jessie Crockett of Suffolk; three brothers, Edwin Byrum and Alvin Byrum, both of Carrsville, Va., and Ray Byrum of Edenton; a granddaughter, Martha Wells of Rocky Mount; and two great-granddaughters, Rachel Marie Wells and Leslie Paige Wells, both of Rocky Mount.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Beaver Hill Cemetery by Rev. Ron Cava. The family will be meeting at the residence of Ray and Francis Byrum. The Evans Funeral Home of Edenton is serving the Hofler family.
