He was brought to New England by his parents and resided in the part of Yarmouth now Dennis. In 1676 in the rate "towards the charges of the late war" his tax was £7 11s. (i) In 1698 his widow was taxed £4 4s. 6d.(j) June 8, 1655, Joseph Howes was propounded to take up his freedom. (k) June 3, 1657, he was admitted and sworn. (l) June 4, 1661, he was on the grand jury. (m) June 7, 1665, he is named as constable of Yarmouth.(n) The same date he was appointed one of three persons to lay out the 100 acres of land granted to William Nickerson at Monomoy (later Chatham) and to place in possession the nine grantees of the lands not allowed to Nickerson. The warrant was dated June 30, 1665. (o) March 6, 1665-6, as constable of Yarmouth, he complained that Thomas Starr had opposed him and used threatening language against him in the execution of his office. The case being tried before a jury, Starr was found guilty and the court fined him £5.(p) The same date he was approved as one of the selectmen of Yarmouth.(q) June 5, 1666, he was one of the selectmen of Yarmouth approved by the court.(r) June 30, 1667, he signed a paper to the General Court in favor of the Rev. (c) He mentions his wife Elizabeth, his sons Samuel, Joseph, John, Nathaniel, Thomas and Amos, and his daughters Mary Hallett, Elizabeth Myrick and Hannah Howes. His sons Nathaniel, Thomas and Amos and his daughter Hannah were under the age of 21 years. He named his wife and his son Joseph his executors, and his brothers Jeremiah Howes and John Mayo to advise and help them. The inventory of his estate, taken Jan. 30, 1694-5, and sworn to Feb. 7, 1694-5, amounted to £288 in real estate and £166 18s. in personal property; total, £454 18s.
" The will of his widow Elizabeth Howes, dated Feb. 7, 1694-5, and proved April 1, 1701, gave her dwelling house, barn and homestead to her sons Nathaniel, Thomas and Amos, and the rest of her estate to he divided between all her surviving children. She made her sons Samuel and Joseph executors.(e) Her inventory, dated March 26, 1701, and sworn to April 1, 1701, by her sons Lieut. Samuel Howes, Joseph Howes, Thomas Howes and Amos Howes, amounted to £125 19s. l0d. in personal property."1 |

| Researcher's Note* | | Arriving in New England 1638, he settled in Barnstable, being a teacher in the church there from its beginning until 1644. He was ordained April 15, 1640. He moved to Eastham in 1646 and was pastor of the church there until 1654, when being "discouraged" he moved to Boston, and became Nov. 1655, the first pastor of the "Old North Church". In 1673 with his own consent he was retired for age, and was succeeded by the famous Dr. Increase Mather. While in Boston, he lived on Middle, now Hanover St.
After retirement, he moved to Yarmouth, and lived there with his daughter, Elizabeth Howes, until his death.
It is claimed that Rev. John Mayo was the son of John Mayo of Cattistock, England, the author of the famous black letter book or pamphlet entitled, "The Pope's Parliament, containing a pleasant and delightful historie wherein."
Another note from Cape Cod History: John Mayo was born in 1597 in Farthinghoe, Northamptonshire, England, s/o John and Katherine Mayo, who later lived and died in Thorpe Mandeville, Northamptonshire. John Mayo was their only son. At 17, he attended Magdalen Hall, Oxford University, but left without taking a degree, probably to escape taking the oath of conformity, which was required to graduate.
In his early 20's, he was in Leiden, Holland to marry there: Jan Meyer (John Mayo) of England, baize-worker, accompanied by Thomas Smeth (Smith), his acquaintance, was betrothed March 21, 1618 to Timmosijn Breyck (Tamisen Brike) of England, accompanied by Susanna Breyck (Brike), her mother, and Marytgen Duijck, (Mary), her sister. ( N.H., vol. H., fo. 216). (Foreign names were commonly "Dutched".) A baize-worker works with wool fabric, and many Puritans in Leiden had this occupation, because there was a demand.
Eventually, he found his way to North Newington, Oxfordshire, England, whence he emigrated to America in the spring of 1638. In 1639, he was an early settler of Barnstable, Plymouth colony. He was a teaching elder there under Rev. John Lothrop. In 1644, he became the first minister and early settler of Eastham, Plymouth colony. Eastham and Barnstable are on Cape Cod. In 1654, he was the first minister of the Second Church of Boston, in what is now the Italian north end of Boston. He retired in 1673 and went back to the Cape to live with his daughter in Yarmouth (in the section which is now Dennis, MA.) He died there in 1676.5 |

The cemetery is located on the east side of the boundary brook (Quivet Creek) between Dennis and Brewster on Cape Cod, Mass. It once fronted Old County Way but when The Kings Highway, Route 6A, was straightened, it was left off the beaten path. The burying ground is entered through an iron gate held by granite posts which are labeled 1881 on the left and 1721 on the right. I imagine the granite/iron rail fence was erected in 1881. The quiet knoll on which it is situated overlooks an unnamed pond which, is evidently the headwaters of Quivett Creek.3 |
