ObituaryDec 7, 2009  OBITUARY: NORTHFIELD - Evelyn Bernice Anair McCanna, 98, formerly of Hardwick, died early Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at the Mayo Healthcare in Northfield, where she had made her home for the last six years.

She was born March 2, 1911, in Greensboro Bend, the daughter of the late George H. and Carrie (Dubie) Anair. She graduated from Hardwick Academy in the class of 1929. She graduated from Johnson Normal School and began her teaching career. In the early 60s, she returned to Goddard College in Plainfield and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in elementary education.

On Aug. 22, 1942, she married George Edward "Mac" McCanna in Biloxi, Mississippi.

In her earlier years, Evelyn, was a teacher in a one-room school in Highgate Springs. She later was a first grade teacher at Hardwick Elementary School, retiring in 1973.

She was a member of St. Norbert's Catholic Church, a charter member of Court St. Veronica's Catholic Daughters, a member of the Hardwick Teachers Union and a member of the Democratic Party, all in Hardwick. She enjoyed playing bridge. She was an avid reader and was always eager to learn. At 80 years of age, she took organ lessons.

She and Mac traveled throughout the United States and Canada in their travel trailer. She loved the time that she spent with her family and her dogs.

Survivors include a daughter, Michele Campbell of Essex; two sons, William G. McCanna of White River and Timothy J. McCanna of Williston; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, George in 1970; a son, Patrick F. McCanna in 2001 and four siblings: Lawrence "Larry" Anair, Muriel Hayward, Velma Riley and Helen Anair.

A Memorial Service will be scheduled in the spring.

In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to the Mayo Healthcare, Patient Activity Fund, 71 Richardson Road, Northfield, Vt. 05663.

Northern Vermont Funeral Service, Hardwick, is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rutland and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the National Grange.

Surviving are her husband, Leon of Rutland; a son, Robert A. Judd and his wife Gail of Allison Park, Pa; a daughter-in-law, Ella Judd of Monroe, N.C; a sister, Lorene V. Graham of Newport; three brothers, Roger G. Armstrong of St. Johnsbury, Leonard R. Armstrong of Danville, Vt., and William L. Armstrong of Newport News, Va; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Ronald L. Judd, in 2002; and by a brother, T/Sgt Gilbert L. Armstrong, in 1965; and by one sister, Beverly M. Hoadley.

There are no visiting hours or funeral services at this time.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
