Francis Howrigan, 84, beloved father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather has gone to be with the Lord and join his loving wife, Neva, and son, Billy. He passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 at his home with his devoted family by his side. He was born in Fletcher, May 12, 1917, the son of the late William and Margaret (McCarthy) Howrigan. On June 17, 1941, he married Neva LaRocque at St. Patrick's Church in Fairfield. She predeceased him July 24, 1998. Francis was a well known Fairfield dairy farmer and former State Senator, serving in the Senate from 1975 to 1994. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. At age 20 he was elected selectman for the town of Fletcher, a position he held for three years. He then served as selectman for the town of Fairfield for 50 years. He held various other positions throughout the years, including Director of Northern Farms, Past Chairman of Franklin County Soil and Natural Resources Commission, Agway, Franklin County Farm Bureau, Vermont Dairy Council, Franklin County and Vermont Sugarmakers Associations, Northwest Regional Planning Commission, Vermont Milk Promotion Board, St. Albans Cooperative Creamery and The Democratic Party. He is the President of the Owl Club, and was the first recipient of the prestigious George D. Aiken "Agriculturist of the Year" award. Francis is survived by his loving children; Michael D. and Judy Howrigan of Enosburg, Margaret and John Pelletier of Georgia, Jeanne Howrigan of St. Albans, Patricia and Marc Reynolds of St. Albans, Raymond J. and Mary Howrigan of Fairfield, Thomas A. and Sue Howrigan of Fairfield, Rita Magnan of Fairfax, Ellen Howrigan of Burlington, John D. Howrigan of Fairfield, Kate and Scott Baldwin of Burlington, and Joan and Jack Hungerford of St. Albans; his devoted grandchildren, Shannon Kane, Molly Swainbank, Michael Howrigan, Michele Paquin, John, Andy, and Moria Pelletier, Aaron, Brian, David and Sarah Reynolds, Liza, Nicole, Ryan, Sam, and Ben Howrigan, Matthew, Luke, Tyler, and Alex Howrigan, Hannah Decker, Justin Magnan, Bronwyn Decker, and Kurt Magnan, Abby and Ethan Baldwin, Seth, Will, Josh, and Derek Hungerford; his great-grandchildren, Samantha, Sabrina, Chelsea, and Whitney Kane, Caleb, Jenessa and Noah Swainbank, Connor and Brayden Howrigan, Austin Magnan, Sylas Decker, and Joshua Reynolds. He also leaves three brothers, Robert and his wife, Virginia Howrigan, Dr. Thomas G. Howrigan, Harold and his wife, Anne Howrigan and all of Fairfield; five sisters, Mary and her husband, Bernard Connor of Fairfield, Rose and her husband, Emmett O'Connell of Burlington, Loretta and her husband, Henry Magnan of Fairfield, Kathleen Connor of Burlington, and Teresa and her husband, John Manahan of St. Albans and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Neva, and his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Francis William "Billy" Howrigan on March 2, 1991, and a brother, Sgt. Raymond Howrigan, USMC, killed in action during WWII at Iwo Jima. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at noon in St. Patrick's Church. Interment will follow in the family lot at St. Patrick's Cemetery. | Obituary | Oct 4, 2009 | OBITUARY: WILLIAM ROBERT HOWRIGAN FAIRFIELD - William Robert Howrigan passed away at the age of 90 on the evening of Oct. 1, at his home with his wife, children, and grandchildren by his side. He was born on May 29, 1919, in the Stone House on his family farm in Fletcher, the third son of William and Margaret (McCarthy) Howrigan. Robert married Frances Virginia Mawn in St. Mary's Church in St. Albans on Feb. 12, 1949. Virginia survives him along with their six sons and three daughters, 37 grandchildren, and six great- grandchildren. He attended one-room schools in Fletcher and Fairfield, graduating from St. Mary's High School in St. Albans in 1937. He was a lifelong and proud member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fairfield, serving as a greeter and opening doors for parishioners to the age of 90. He was a well known Franklin county dairyman and maple sugar maker. He was always active in local and state community service. He was first elected selectman in Fletcher at the age of 23, and also served as Justice of the Peace in that town until purchasing his first farm in Fletcher in 1948. He was a licensed agent for Farm Bureau Insurance and served for a short time as a U.S. customs inspector in Alburgh, Vt. In September 1953, he and his wife Virginia purchased the McFeeters Farm in Fairfield, which became their home, Misty Maples Farm. Through the years, several adjoining farms were added to the original acreage. Misty Maples Farm, "The Lord, the land, the animals and the maples. These are our providers..." Robert was a member of the St. Albans Cooperative Creamery and also a member of the Franklin County Maple Producers Coop.He had a lasting and rewarding relationship with Sam Cutting of Dakin Farm to whom he sold maple syrup for over 30 years. His agricultural contributions included Franklin County Farm Bureau president, member of the FranklinGrand Isle County F.H.A. Board and the VT State A.S.C.S. Board. He also served on the VT Maple Promotion Board, VT Sugarmaker's Association, and VT Maple Industry Council. Recognitions included VT/NH Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year, 1960; VT Sugarmaker of the year, 1986; VT Maple Person of the year, 1989; Franklin County Maplerama Community Service Award, 2002; and VT Maple Industry Council Sumner Williams Award, 2005. In 1959, Robert became a member of the building and site committee for the new Fairfield Center School, the community project of which he was most proud. This committee negotiated and secured the land for the Fairfield School Complex from Mr. and Mrs. S. Allen Soule. He was elected to the Fairfield School Board in 1960 and served for 21 years as a School Director. During this time the new Fairfield Center School was built and six one-room schools were closed. He also served on the St. Albans City, Town, and Fairfield Supervisory Union Board. Other community service included Kerbs Memorial Hospital director, Northwest Medical Center incorporator, VT State Banking Commission, member of the VT State Whey Authority Board, Burlington Savings Bank Advisory Board, Bent Northrop Memorial Library Trustee, St. Patrick's Cemetery Association trustee, St. Albans Historical Society member, and a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. A strong believer in family and friends, and dedicated to dairy farming and maple sugaring, Robert built his public service duties around his priorities at home. His greatest reward was his family, and especially his grandchildren. He was a proud American and loved to instill his patriotism and respect for those who came before us, sacrificing to protect our way of life. He was proud of his Irish heritage and loved the St. Patrick's Day celebration, along with his own version of an Irish jig or two! Robert loved a good story and had an infectious laugh that endeared him to all. In addition to Virginia, his wife of 60 years, survivors include his nine children, Patrick and Paula (Barrette) of Sheldon, Mary and John Schreindorfer, William Robert Jr. and Patricia (Flanagan), Eileen and Garry Trudell, Daniel and Shelley (Read), David and Peggy (Hubbard), Brian and Cari (Brady), Catherine and Steven Beauregard, and Mark and Sarah (Duffy) Howrigan, all of Fairfield. He will be dearly missed by his 37 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Thomas G. Howrigan, MD of Fletcher, and sisters Loretta Magnan and her husband Henry of Fairfield, Kathleen Connor of Burlington, and Teresa Manahan and her husband John of St. Albans. Connor, R.N., 83, a lifelong resident of this community, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 13, 2009, in the Northwestern Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Her loving family was at her side. She was born in Fletcher, Vt., Feb. 2, 1926, the daughter of William and Margaret (McCarthy) Howrigan. On June 22, 1950, Mary married Bernard T. Connor in St. Patrick's Church in Fairfield. Bernard, her husband of 58 years, survives her. Mary a attended Shepardson Elementary School in Fletcher and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1944 and the St. Albans Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She was a proud member of the U. S. Cadet Nurse Corp. She was a nurse at St. Albans Hospital from 1947 to 1954 and an obstetrics and operating room nurse at Kerbs Memorial Hospital and then Northwestern Medical Center from 1954 to 1985. In 1991, Mary volunteered as a Guardian Ad Litem for Franklin County Family/District and Probate Court. A position she held to this date. She was a member of Court St. Mary's Order, Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Mary was very involved in Franklin County civic affairs. In Fairfield she served on the Board of Civil Authority, The School Board and Reparative Board, was a Justice of the Peace, Health Officer, School Nurse and a member of the Fairfield Card Club. She was a greeter at St. Patrick's Church and was honored as an Outstanding Woman in Ministry representing St. Patrick's Parish in 2007. She also was employed by the Franklin County Home Health Agency where she conducted birthing classes and worked on flu clinics. In addition to her husband, Bernard, Mary is survived by five children: her son, Daniel F. Connor of Burlington; her daughters, Sheila C. Heald and her husband, Winslow, of St. Albans, Loretta C. Pigeon and her husband, Richard, of St. Albans, Margaret C. Brosseau and her husband, André, of St. Albans, and Maureen C. Morgan and her husband, Robert, of Plymouth, Mass; her grandchildren: Elizabeth and Emily Pigeon, Cole and Colin Connor, Matthew Brosseau and Robert Connor Morgan. She also leaves three brothers and four sisters: Robert Howrigan and his wife, Virginia, of Fairfield, Dr. Thomas G. Connor, 90, a lifelong resident of this community passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in the Northwestern Medical Center with his loving family at his side. He was born in Fairfield, Vermont July 5, 1921, the son of Francis "Frank" and Ruby (Sorrell) Connor. On June 22, 1950 he married Mary Howrigan in St. Patrick's Church in Fairfield, VT. Bernard and Mary went on to raise their five children in Fairfield. Bernard's family was the focal point of his life. Bernard attended Fairfield schools until the time he was needed on the family farm. Bernard had a lifelong passion for learning. He was an avid reader and a self-taught man. A favorite outing was a trip to Barnes and Noble where he enjoyed adding to his personal library which featured an extensive collection of books on the Civil War. Bernard was a self-taught carpenter / master craftsman. He had a passion for woodworking. The fruits of his labor are spread throughout the area. Bernard leaves behind many buildings, kitchens, and pieces of furniture that his family and friends will enjoy for years to come. Bernard had many hobbies that brought him much enjoyment throughout his life. He took great joy from beekeeping and believed deeply in the power of bee venom therapy. Following his grandchildren's sporting events was something that fulfilled him immensely. In particular, he took much pleasure from watching BFA softball. Planting a garden and watching it grow blessed by God's bounty provided Bernard with countless hours of satisfaction. Sugaring season was a favorite time of year for Bernard. He enjoyed all aspects of maple sugaring and took great enjoyment from boiling at the Connor family farm, "up on the hill" at William E. Howrigan's and at the Henry Magnan sugar bushes. Bernard is survived by his five children; his son Daniel F. Connor of Fairfield, his daughters, Sheila C. Heald of St. Albans, Loretta C. Pigeon and her husband, Richard of St. Albans, Margaret C.
