ObituaryNov 16, 2015  OBITUARY: Doris Amy Sprague, 96, passed away early Friday morning, November 13, 2015 at Pine Heights Nursing Home.

Ms. Sprague was born at her maternal grandparents' home in (Algiers) Guilford on March 23, 1919, the daughter of Raye and Amy (Newcomb) Sprague. She and her siblings lived in Weatherhead Hollow in Guilford until her second grade. Then she and her family moved to West Brattleboro.

After her parents separated, Doris, her brother, Donald and her sister, Irene went to live with their paternal grandparents, Alfred and Elizabeth Sprague, on Melrose Street in 1933. Grandpa Sprague (Alfred) died in January 1934 and her brother, Donald, died in April of 1934. When her parents divorced in October 1934, her sister Irene went to live with her mother in Bernardston, Mass. Doris stayed with her father and attended Academy School in West Brattleboro then Brattleboro High School, graduating with the Class of 1939. During her last two years of high school, her father and grandmother moved to Hardwick, Vt. Her dad got a job up there and Doris lived with her dad's sister, Nellie Fitts.

After school Doris worked in various jobs in Spofford Lake and Putney. For two years she was employed for Professor John and Anne Holden in Putney, caring for their home and baby son, Ben. In 1941 she worked for Dr. Allan Sutherland as a medical secretary, living again with her uncle and aunt on 25 Green Street. She worked full time for the doctor from 1942 to 1954 and part time until 1963 and continued with his taxes until 1976. She also cared for the Sutherland's youngest son, David, for nine years of his life. During this time she helped put out an international medical magazine, editing and mailing, and preparing his income taxes. In 1954 she worked part time for Elizabeth Wagner in the shoe store and then for her successor, Donald Robertson, who purchased the shoe store.

When Uncle Francis died in 1963, Doris took a bookkeeping position with the Volkswagen dealership in Bennington to make a home for her Aunt Nellie. She worked for the V.W., Dodge, and later the Pontiac dealerships over the 19 years living in Bennington and received many awards and honors as bookkeeper and accountant until 1982 when she and her aunt returned to West Brattleboro in 1984. She and Aunt Nellie took residency at Hayes Court Senior Housing. Upon retirement, Doris worked part time for Taylor for Flowers until 1987.

Doris was baptized in 1935 in West Brattleboro Baptist Church where she served in various capacities until 1962 as assistant clerk, Sunday school teacher, choir and the weekly newsletter. In Bennington, she joined the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and served as an aid in the nursery. When returning to Brattleboro, she joined the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Green Mountain Chapel.

From December 1963 to January 1966 she worked for Liggett Bosworth running Burroughs bookkeeping machines and was on the VW Honor Roll as well as the Dodge Honor Roll when Mr. Liggett transferred his dealership to Dodge. In September 1975 she transferred to the Pontiac Buick Dealership for Walter L. Barber until September 5, 1975 at which time Robert Mitchell bought the dealership and Doris continued until April 1982. Doris received plaques, awards and honors as bookkeeper and accounting for the Pontiac-Buick Dealership.

She returned to West Brattleboro and worked for Donald Record at Mt. Home Trailer Park and Dorothy Russell at Vt. Travelers.

Doris did many volunteer programs including knitting 30-45 sweaters per year for the Christmas Stocking and volunteering 1, 000 hours per year for R.S.V.P. Doris was a professional knitter for 22 years. She was treasurer of the Hayes Court Assoc. for 19 years and secretary for two years. Doris was very fond of God's handwork, especially in nature. She loved trees & nature, Christian music, photography, writing and reading (especially God's Word), and she did much with family genealogy. Doris loved to sing and sang in many churches. She claimed that one day when she goes to heaven and gets her eyes and ears, she will sing to the glory of the Lord.

Doris is survived by one sister, Irene Long of Granby, MA two nieces, Nancy Kriss and Karen Dean, and several grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her Aunt Nellie died in 1997 at the age of 94, and her brother, Donald Sprague.

A memorial service in celebration of Doris's life will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at the Green Mountain Chapel on Western Avenue with Pastor Bill Steele, officiating. Burial will be in the Family lot in West Brattleboro Cemetery on Mather Road. ObituaryMay 26, 2017  OBITUARY: Irene Helen Long passed away on May 23, 2017, at the MeadowBrook of Granby Nursing Home in Granby, CT after a series of illnesses.

Born in West Brattleboro, VT, in 1922, she was the third child of Ray Osborne Sprague and Amy Bird Newcomb.

Irene married Wesley John Long in 1941 and settled on Cornwall Street in Hartford, CT where they raised their four children: Robert W. of Port Charlotte, FL; Nancy I. Kniss, of Fort Wayne, IN; David C. (deceased); and Karen A. Dean of Cambria, CA.

After Wesley's passing in 1983, Irene moved to East Granby, CT, where she continued to provide life care for David until his passing in 2001.

She is preceded in death by her sister, Doris Amy Sprague, and brother, Donald Raye Sprague, both of Brattleboro, VT. Irene is survived by her children: Robert, Nancy, and Karen, seven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.

She worked as a retail clerk at for fourteen years at Walgreens Drug Store until her retirement at 85 years of age. She was an active member of the The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

SERVICES: Cremation services were provided by Carmon Community Funeral Homes. Interment will be at the Mather's Cemetery, West Brattleboro, VT., at a date to be determined by the family.

ObituarySep 2, 2017  OBITUARY: Arnold E. Canedy, born in Brattleboro, VT on October 24, 1925, passed away on August 25, 2017 in Phoenix, AZ, where he resided since 1999.

He was a 1943 graduate of Brattleboro High School. Arnold served in the US Army during World War II in Germany and was discharged in June 1947. He worked in the Brattleboro area in the auto repair business and retired as the owner of Canedy's Service Center.

Arnold is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Eileen Floberg, whom he married in October of 1947. Arnold is also survived by his son David and his wife Kathy, of Hampton Falls, NH; Dennis and his wife Kim of Phoenix, AZ; and Doug and his partner, Joannie Hartman, of Waddell, AZ. He is also survived by seven grandsons, one granddaughter, four great-granddaughters, and three great-grandsons. Arnold has been an active participant in his Lutheran Church community and an active member of a quilter program within the church. He will be truly missed by his many family members and friends.
