OBITUARY: SUNBURY - Mary Elizabeth Lassiter, 86, of U.S. Highway 158 East, died Friday, May 7, 2010 in Guardian Care of Elizabeth City.

Miss Lassiter was born in Gates County and was the daughter of the late William Herbert Sr. and Dolna Harrell Lassiter.

Past employment included work as an operator with the phone company, secretarial work with a law firm, and in earlier years as a clerk in a department store. She was a member of Damascus Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret Hires and Dorothy Carter; and a brother, Fred R. Lassiter. Surviving are three brothers, W.H. "Billy" Lassiter and wife Norma of Sunbury, Edward A. Lassiter and wife Dorene of Asheville, N.C., and John C. Lassiter of Sunbury; a sister-in-law, Evelyn R. Lassiter of Sunbury; and several nieces and nephews and extended family members.

A funeral will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, handling arrangements.

OBITUARY: HOBBSVILLE - Dorothy Lassiter "Dot" Carter, 81, of the 1000 block of Carters Road, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Mrs. Carter was born in Gates County and was the daughter of the late William Herbert Sr. and Dolna Harrell Lassiter. A retired kindergarten teacher's assistant at Buckland Elementary School, she was a member of Gatesville Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Herman Carter Jr; a daughter, Diane Carter; a sister, Margaret L. Hires; and a brother, Fred R. Lassiter.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Sasser and husband Percy of Youngsville and Lucy McPeters and husband Steve of Asheville; two sons, C.H. "Bud" Carter III and wife Deborah of Gatesville and Jeff Carter of Marietta, Ga; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Lassiter of Elizabeth City; three brothers, W.H. "Billy" Lassiter and Johnny Lassiter, both of Sunbury and Edward A. Lassiter of Asheville; four grandchildren, Benjamin and Morgan Carter and Zachary and Rebekah McPeters; and two great-granddaughters, Nakayla Lamb and Rylee Carter.

A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Gatesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Lamar Eiland. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at the Carter homeplace. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, and all other times at her residence.

In lieu of flowers, contributions that have been designated for the purchase of kindergarten books may be made to Buckland Elementary School, P.O. Box 68, Gates, NC 27937.
