She was a native of Norfolk County and had been a resident of Oaklette for 28 years. She was a daughter of the late Dr. George Nolley and Margaret Courtney Jane Wilson Halstead. She was a member of Oaklette Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. R.E. Collier, of Norfolk; four sons, Halstead Rountrey, of Norfolk; Claud J. Rountrey, Jr., of Richmond; George W. Rountrey, of Virginia Beach, and W. Franklin Rountrey, of Norfolk; three sisters, Mrs. N.G. Wilson, Mrs. S.N. Etheridge and Mrs. W.L. Lamerdin, all of Norfolk, and a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Cox Funeral Home this afternoon at 2 o'clock by the Rev. C.W. Hillman, pastor of Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church.
Interment will be in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rountrey, wife of Claude Joseph Rountrey, 815 Oaklette Avenue, Oaklette, who died at a local hospital Friday afternoon, were conducted at the Cox Funeral Home yesterday at 2 p.m. The Rev. C.W. Hillman, pastor of Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church, officiated. The pallbearers were N.G. Wilson, Jr., W.L. Lamerdin, Dr. S.N. Etheridge, Hubert Rountrey, John F Stevens and L. Belmont Williams. Interment was in the family plot in Magnolia Cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late James and Maude Eley and was preceded in death by her first husband, George W. Rountrey; second husband, Capt. George I. Garner, U.S. Coast Guard, retired; two sisters, Adele Eley Sorrell and Frances E. Williams; and a brother, James A. Eley Jr.
Survivors include one brother, Ernest L. Eley of Hilton Head, S.C; two stepsons, George Duane Garner of Richmond, Va., and Allan Jay Garner of Bethesda, Md; two granddaughters and six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church, the Retired Officers Wives Club and the Cavalier Garden Club. She retired from Hofheimers Inc. after 38 years.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. A chapel service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home by The Very Rev. Kate Bobbitt. Interment will follow in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

ObituaryMay 20, 2002  OBITUARY: William Franklin "Froggy" Rountrey, 87, of the 900 block of St. Lawrence Ave., received his greatest blessing Sunday, May 19, 2002, when he was taken home to be with his Heavenly Father. He touched the lives of many during his 87 years on Earth, setting examples for others as a Christian father and husband, as well as a highly respected professional, civic and church leader. He will be remembered by many as an honest and upright man with a gentle spirit and pure heart. He gave much more than he received, always putting the needs of others ahead of his own needs.
He was born in Norfolk County and lived his entire life in the Oaklette area. He graduated from Portlock High School as class salutatorian and then from the Norfolk Division of William and Mary College, now ODU. He was the retired president of McCallum Inspection Company and founder and past president and CEO of McCallum Testing Laboratories.
Froggy became active in numerous civic organizations beginning in the late 1930s. He served on the Central YMCA Board, spent 13 years as business manager and board member of the Norfolk Symphony and Civic Chorus, and served two consecutive years as president of the Norfolk Junior Chamber of Commerce during World War II, earning the title of ''The Man Who Gets Things Done.'' While in the Junior Chamber of Commerce he was also given the Key Man Award in 1941-1944 and was named Outstanding Man of the Year in the state in 1946.
He helped to form and he served on the Norfolk Community Council. He was instrumental in establishing the Norfolk Civic Chorus, Miss Virginia Pageant, Tidewater Council of Natural History, Norfolk's first Boy's Club on Colonial Avenue (secretary), the Boy's Club on Azalea Garden Road, and he was instrumental in establishing food handling procedures for the Norfolk Health Department.
He served on the board of the Virginia Wildlife Federation, was a past member of the Norfolk Rotary Club, and was a court-appointed member of the Chesapeake Zoning Appeals Board for more than 20 years. He was a former member and president of the Tidewater Council of Natural History, Virginia Society of Ornithology, Cape Henry Bird Club, and Rotary Club of Chesapeake. He was a life member of the American Wood Preservers Association, life member of the American Society for Testing and Materials, and active on committees of the American National Standards Institute.
While serving as president of the Virginia Society of Ornithology, he was instrumental in the passing of legislation to protect birds of prey, which is still in effect today. He was one of the founders of the Cape Henry Bird Club and had been consistently active in the ornithological society's annual bird counts. Being a self-taught expert on bird identification, he was called on many times through the years to identify birds in all parts of the state.
He was a lifelong member of Oaklette Methodist Church. He began teaching the Young Adult Class in 1947 and was the first and only full-time teacher of the Men's Bible Class for more than 50 years. During his lifetime, he held many administrative positions at Oaklette such as chairman of the Official Board, chairman of numerous commissions, church treasurer, trustee, and lay leader.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Katharine Riggan Rountrey, by his parents, Claude Joseph and Florence Virginia Halstead Rountrey, by his sister, Florence R. Collier, and by his brothers, George W. Halstead and Claude J. Rountrey Jr. He leaves behind a daughter, Kaye R. Herndon and her husband Jim of Chesapeake; and a granddaughter, Sheron Kaye Berg and her fiancé Bobby Antoskow of Chesapeake.
The family will be at Francis Gay Funeral Home in South Norfolk from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklette United Methodist Church, Chesapeake, followed by burial at Riverside Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oaklette United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 520 Oaklette Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23325.

ObituaryMar 19, 1999  OBITUARY: Vernon Gates Rountrey, 77, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999. A native of Altavista, VA, he had been a resident of Newport News, VA, since 1941. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the E.T.O. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and Good Conduct Medal.

After graduation from the Shipyard Apprentice School, Electrical Department, he soon became a local entrepreneur. At the beginning of the Korean War he established Hampton Roads Battery Plant in downtown Newport News. He developed and manufactured his own brand of marine and industrial storage batteries and supplied the military and local industries with his products for more than two decades.

After retirement from business, his longtime hobby of developing prototypes of new ideas led to a second career. He worked with Modern Machine and Tool Co. for 15 years before final retirement, with developing energy-saving devices his specialty.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine J. Rountrey; two daughters and their husbands, Barbara Jo and Don Ziese of Madison, Wis., and Debbie and Rodney Stancill of Newport News; one son and his wife, Jim and Gale Rountrey of Smithfield, N.C; one brother, Baxter J. Rountrey of Altavista; two sisters-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Rountrey of Richmond and Alma Rountrey of Altavista; and four grandchildren, Heather and Brandon Rountrey of Smithfield, N.C., and Fields and Travis Scarborough of Newport News.

Vernon was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family was his pride and joy and the sunshine of his life. In 1994, the Daily Press (out of all the letters submitted nationally) voted him Grandfather of the Year. Vernon’s friends and family honor him with their deepest thanks for his loyalty, his goodness, his generosity towards children, his inventions to make this world a better place, and his love and work to make our environment a better world.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 19, in the W.J. Smith and Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Peninsula Memorial Park, with the Rev. Scott Bowerman and the Rev. David Forest officiating.

Vernon requested, in lieu of flowers, that all donations be given to the Peninsula Food Bank, 9914 Hosier St., Newport News, VA 23601.

ObituarySep 24, 2013  OBITUARY: Newport News - Loyce Elaine Jones Rountrey, 89, joined our Lord on September 19, 2013. Elaine is survived by her three children, Barbara Jo Rountrey Ziese (Don) of Madison, WI, James Baxter Rountrey (Gale) of Smithfield, NC, and Debbie G. Rountrey of Newport News; four grandchildren, Heather Rountrey, Brandon Rountrey (Charmaine), Fields Scarborough, and Travis Scarborough. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Gates Rountrey; her parents, Jim Willis and Ethel Amanda Jones; a brother J. W. Jones; and a sister Catherine Brinkley. The family would like to thank the staff at James River Convalescent Center for all their kindness, support and great care they gave Elaine and her family. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Akers officiating. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Peninsula Food Bank. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
