ObituaryMar 31, 1953  OBITUARY: Vermont Secretary of State and Corporate Executive. Fred A. Howland, 88, Former president of the National Life Insurance Co. died today 31st of March, 1953 at his home. A native of Franconia, N.H. he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1887, studied law with William P. Dillingham while Dillingham was Governor of Vermont, and was admitted to the bar in 1890.

He practiced in Montpelier, and the firm in which he was a partner included Dillingham until he was elected to the US Senate in 1900.

A Republican, Howland was Assistant Clerk and Clerk of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1890 to 1896, after which he served a two-year term as Washington County State's Attorney.

From 1899 to 1903 Howland served as Secretary of State. He declined renomination in 1902, and joined the National Life Insurance Company as Vice President and General Counsel. In 1909 he became the company's senior Vice President, and in 1916 he was promoted to President. Howland held this position until retiring in 1937, when he was succeeded by former Congressman Elbert Brigham.

Howland's wife Margaret was the sister of Edward Dewey, who was the President of National Life, and granddaughter of Julius Y. Dewey, who was its first President. She was also the niece of Admiral George Dewey.
